The Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials welcomed William Tennent into their home stadium for the 2023 homecoming game, and from the very beginning it was clear that PW had the edge over their opponent in many ways. The Colonials really dominated from start to finish, and did not let off the gas until the game was far out of reach. For the huge crowd drawn in for the finale of homecoming week, it was a triumphant 49-7 win that gives a good case for Plymouth being the best team in their division.

William Tennent actually ended up getting the game started early, they opened up their game with a first play flea flicker which resulted in over a 50 yard gain. The Tennent offense looked very good on their opening possession as well, moving the ball on the ground and through the air to get into the redzone. But an always resilient PW defensive line was able to get into the backfield multiple times to force an eventual turnover on downs. It didn’t take long for the scoring to be opened up following that, as QB Caiden Leszczynski hit his receiver Marcus Laffredo for a 70 yard score that got the crowd hyped up. From this point on it was clear who the better team was. On the answering drive for Tennent, they gave an interception to DB Anthony Iannozzi which nearly got taken back to the house. PW then worked the ball down field with chunk plays before Leszczynski completed a pass through pressure to RB Luke Winterbottom who took it in for a score from 21 yards out. As they tried to stop the bleeding, William Tennent once again drove down the field with pace as was inside the 45 when a fourth down deep shot was deflected away and they turned it over on downs for a second time. The rain began to come down when PW next took the ball on offense, this time the Panther defense gave their team some life, as they stopped a poorly executed fake punt which set up their offense with a great spot to start the second.

A chunk play for 20 yards to open the half put William Tennent in the redzone for a second time, but once again the Colonials defense was too much to handle. Tennent chose to attempt a 30 yard field goal which ended up sailing to the left and going incomplete, leaving a two score game still. Plymouth Whitemarsh play makers Winterbottom, Baker, and Leszczynski all had plays for 10+ yards in their next chance which put PW in a spot to take a truly commanding lead. This came to reality as Leszczynski hit WR Andrew Iannozzi for his first touchdown of the year on a 12 yard pass. Both teams traded three and outs before we got a third Tennent turnover on downs, and PW took a comfortable 21-0 lead into the locker room for the half.

Following the homecoming festivities during the half, Plymouth Whitemarsh was determined to enter the second half of the game and just drive their opponent out. They sustained a great first drive that included three separate 15+ yard chunk plays before they went to their formidable ground game and Nazye Boggs split a tackle to rush in from 8 yards out. Boggs added more impressive stats to his 2023 resume when he picked off the William Tennent QB to give the ball right back to his team. The Colonials only needed one play to get it done, with Leszczynski throwing a pass in the flat to Winterbottom who ended up powering his way through defenders to get into the endzone for his second touchdown. Plymouth Whitemarsh flattened all thoughts of any comeback when they notched their third interception of the game and then proceeded to break free just three plays later for a 60 yard score. Following another Tennent three and out, we had a score of 42-0 after three and a very clear idea of what PW is capable of.

The fourth quarter gave PW a third game in a row to run backups out for significant minutes, and both sides of the ball excelled in their time on the field. The backup Colonials defense stopped a great Panthers drive and forced another turnover on downs. The Colonials backup offense once again pieced together a solid drive that resulted in a score. The following William Tennent drive allowed them to break the gruesome shutout and get some points on the board with a 30 yard rushing touchdown, but it was far too late for the Panthers. PW then proceeded to run some clock and cruise to another victory.

Plymouth Whitemarsh has most certainly been a wrecking ball in their last couple of games and they show no sign of really slowing down. The shutout loss to Quakertown still stings in the minds of the PW players, and since then they’ve been able to outscore their opponents 139-34, an outstanding number for this point in the year. After now dropping to 2-5 on the year, the hard times don’t seem like they are going to stop for William Tennent, they will face Wissahickon next week in what will potentially be another painful game for them. PW continues to ride the wave of success that has carried them to new heights in the middle of this season. With their record improving to a dominant 5-1, they have found themselves deep in the playoff race and very soon could find themselves looking at one of the top seeds in the postseason. In the final stretch of three games, PW will play Springfield on the road, then their toughest game of the year against Wiss also on the road before coming home for senior night vs Upper Moreland. As of right now at least two of those games look like wins, and if they continue playing the way they are right now then there should be no debate on whether this team can make a legit run deep into the playoffs.
