ROYERSFORD — Welcome to the postseason everyone! Springfield-Montco got a warm welcome as they stepped into the grounds of Pope John Paul Friday evening and got dominated, 48-0. The Golden Panthers snatched this game from the jump and did not look back. From making stops on defense, creating turnovers, capitalizing on offense to leading by over 40 at the half, everything was rolling for the home squad.
The Spartans started out with the football, taking the opening kickoff. They quickly went three and out, which was a common occurrence for the game as a whole. On the first play from scrimmage, the Golden Panthers got things started right off the rip. Sophomore Kassidy Jackson opened up the scoring, taking in his first rushing score of two. A miscue on the PAT, resulted in the score ending up at 6-0 early on. Pope forced another three and out, then jumped out to a two score lead. Dylan Skarbek rushed it in, 14-0.
Feeling pressured, Spartans turnovers started to rain in. Nico DiGiacomo reeled in an INT, which led to the first of three Brandon DeAngelo touchdowns. He recorded two offensively and one on the defense. At this point it was 21-0, and the first quarter scoring was not over. Springfield threw another INT, but this time the pick was bobbled and returned for another touchdown. The first quarter masterclass from the home team was finally over and they led by four touchdowns, 28-0.
The second quarter did not end up being much different. Turnovers for the visiting team continued. DeAngelo secured a pick six to put his team up 35-0, and that was his second touchdown of the evening. Kassidy Jackson capped his night off, scoring his second touchdown after the defense forced another change of possession. Right before halftime, DeAngelo did it again, taking a jet sweep in and receiving his hat trick. The score heading into the half was 48-0, Golden Panthers.
“Our coach before the game, he said “Just do your 1-11″, so once everyone does their job on the field it helps me to make big plays like that, but I wouldn’t do it without my team. I am just prepared for it, had a big year last year, all state receiver, so I just have to prepare for big moments” said DeAngelo postgame.
The second half got underway after the break. The Spartans were looking to show fight and put some points on the board. They had a few drives that looked promising, but none of which were able to capitalize. Pope John Paul had their second string in, and chewed a bunch of clock.
“A lot of discipline. The kids were locked in this week in practice, they knew what was at hand, trying to get to the District Championship game. It was a great week of practice. Our defense has been playing well all year, Brandon DeAngelo, I think he has like 9 or 10 interceptions this year and probably another 3 or 4 for pick sixes, so our experience is in our secondary. We are young upfront, but these guys are starting to show up. They’re rallying to the ball and they’re playing physical, right at the time we need them to peak” said Head Coach Darrell Scott postgame.
Pope John Paul II will take on Bishop Shanahan for the District 1 4A Championship game next week, at home.
