Football games on the week of Homecoming, ‘Homecoming games”, can be overlooked because of the extracurricular activities leading up to it. Pottsgrove took care of Upper Merion in 35-7 fashion Friday night and took the game from the very opening kick. The Falcons leaned on the run game for the damage done, with all of their touchdowns coming by way of a rush.
Upper Merion received the opening kick, and immediately turned it over. A fumble set up Pottsgrove deep in Vikings territory. They capitalized with an Kevin Robinson Jr short score. Robinson totaled two on the night. A huge part as to why Upper Merion lost the way that they did was simply because they could not move the football, having multiple three and outs.
“We didn’t come out and match the intensity, from the first kickoff. We got the ball, tried to do some trick stuff. That was players doing what they want to do. When you are trying to win football games, players have to do what they are coached to do. We tried to bounce back and then things just snowballed. You can’t win football games with penalties, turnovers, things like that. That is what we have been doing this season, that is why we are suffering right now”.
Heading into the half, Kevin Robinson scored his second, and the Falcons were up two scores, 15-0. They received the second half kickoff and picked up right where they left off. This half was the Isaiah Rivera show. Rivera scored three touchdowns, and had a fourth down tackle to create a turnover on downs.
Late in the fourth, Pottsgrove was up 35-0. Upper Merion had the football and was looking to put something up on the scoreboard, scraping for even a field goal. Instead, Rudolf Wilhelm connected with Zion smith for a 28 yard touchdown, with just over a minute left and counting.
The Vikings drop to 1-7, now just having two games left in the season. They will host Pope John Paul ll next Friday at 7:00 Pm. Upper Merion also has their PAC crossover game for their season finale. The opponent for that game has yet to be announced.
