It’s time. Protime has decided to put up the yuletide lights early this year. He’s not getting any younger and he grows weary each year throwing up the little buggers when it’s cold and snowy outside. Over the years he’s gotten much smarter when decorating for Christmas.
For example, Protime tests the lights before hanging them on the rainspout or in the bushes. He once had all the lights up, plugged them in, and nothing worked. It was a bear going around trying to find the couple of culprits that had burned out. He also puts rocks inside his plastic snowmen so the wind doesn’t blow them over and as far as the extension cords stretch. He once had timers so he didn’t have to go outside to plug the lights in, but the lights were so bright the timer would turn off when they came on and then turn the lights back on when they went out. Everything blinked from the snowmen to the spotlights.
Well, Protime doesn’t have that much trouble predicting high school football games. He’s not 100% accurate, but the dim light in his head never shuts off, much to the chagrin of Mrs. Protime. Last week the Auspicious Auger turned in a 23-4 performance to up his season’s record to 228-55-1 (.805). Here are a couple dozen picks for the second week of playoffs.
Garden Spot 24 Ephrata 21 – Garden Spot knocked off Ephrata to give them their only loss. It’s hard to beat someone twice, but the Spartans will defeat the Mountaineers in one of a dozen or more must-see game this week.
Delaware Valley 31 Abington Heights 22 – The Del Val Warriors are on a roll after losing to Selinsgrove, Harrisburg, and Downingtown East to begin the season. Those 3 teams have a combined record of 29-1-1 for the year. Don’t count out the Comets, but it’s Del Val’s game to win.
Pine-Richland 28 Penn Hills 20 – Coach LeDonne made some changes part way through the year and Pine-Richland hasn’t lost since, including knocking off Pittsburgh Central Catholic. It’s going to be close as the Indins of Penn Hills has a dynamite QB. But in the end the Rams will secure the win and avenge an early season loss to Penn Hills.
Cocalico 35 Conestoga Valley 31 – Protime saw both teams last year and Conestoga Valley has kicked it up a notch. The Buckskins will match the Cocalico Eagles pretty much score for score, but will fall just short.
Lakeview 28 Mercer 26 – Here’s another game where the tables will turn. Mercer’s Mustangs galloped to victory in the regular season game, but Lakeview’s Sailors will win the playoff.
Jersey Shore 24 Selinsgrove 23 – Both of these schools are 10-0-1. Guess who the tied? Each other of course and that was due to tragic circumstances. This will be a really emotional game, especially for Jersey Shore. That’s why Protime is picking the Bulldogs to win this slugfest over the Seals.
Bald Eagle Area 27 Forest Hills 13 – This will be a much tougher contest for BEA than they think. The Rangers have some very good athletes, but will finally succumb to the BEA Bald Eagles.
Lampeter-Strasburg 26 East Pennsboro 21 – The Panthers will scare the Pioneers in a very well-played game. However, Lampeter-Strasburg will come out victorious over the East Penns Panthers.
Clairton 42 Union 37 – Protime has this as a high-scoring affair with the Bears sending the Scotties home based on the fact Clairton’s first 2 games resulted in losses to unbeaten Westinghouse and one-loss Washington.
Downingtown West 17 Souderton 14 – The Whippets ruin the Indians unblemished season with a 3-point win.
Westinghouse 26 Berlin 24 – Protime can’t pull the trigger and pick Berlin, although of any games this week, this may be one that goes the other way. The Bulldogs stay undefeated and send the Mountaineers home with only their second defeat.
Twin Valley 34 ELCO 28 – A real battle in District 3. Protime guarantees the Raiders will win. That’s because both schools are nicknamed the Raiders. Protime will also guarantee the Raiders will lose. Twin Valley’s only loss is to Ephrata.
Cathedral Prep 41 Hollidaysburg 33 – Just a hunch, but a few points will be scored as the Ramblers move on and the Golden Tigers call it a year. Hollidaysburg has played a daunting schedule to say the least. Their 5 losses were to Westinghouse, Selinsgrove, Danville, Ft. Hill, MD, and Allegany, MD. The House, Selinsgrove, and Ft. Hill are undefeated. Danville has one loss and Allegany two.
Nazareth 38 Northampton 28 – The Blue Eagles are flying high as they take care of the Koncrete Kids, setting up a possible rematch with Parkland.
Central Clarion 42 Brookville 28 – Central Clarion’s Wildcats, the #3 team in AA, takes care of business by beating the Blue Raiders for the second time this year.
Southern Columbia 38 Mt. Carmel 34 – Mt. Carmel won the regular season meeting, but Southern had something like 6 turnovers. That is probably not going to happen this time around. The Tigers are focused and will contain the Red Tornadoes.
Richland 37 Mt. Union 20 – The Rams should face BEA for the District 6 AA championship next week after they defeat the Trojans of Mt. Union.
Plymouth-Whitemarsh 14 West Chester Rustin 13 – Protime’s crystal ball has the Colonials beating the Golden Knights in a low-scoring contest.
Avonworth 28 Beaver 22 – The regulr season game between these two was close and this one will be no different, including the outcome. The Antelopes stay unbeaten by leaping past the Bobcats.
New Oxford 24 Hershey 17 – Both teams are having very nice years. Protime’s coin flip predicts the New Oxford Colonials outdueling the Hershey Trojans.
Central 34 Penn Cambria 12 – The Scarlet Dragons continue their undefeated season by winning the D-6 AAA crown over the P.C. Panthers.
Palmerton 35 North Schuylkill 28 – This time the game will be closer, but with the same outcome. The Blue Bombers will go to 12-0 as they beat the Spartans.
South Side Area 39 Greensburg Central Catholic 19 – South Side remains undefeated by ending the Centurions season. The SSA Rams are very quietly climbing the ladder in 1A. Protime already knew they were going to make a run before anyone else.
South Williamsport 18 Canton 14 – The Mountaineers top the Warriors in a good one and get redemption for a loss earlier in the year.
Spring-Ford 31 C.B. South 28 – The Rams upset the Titans in a real barn-burner from District 1.
