Protime Predictions – Passing on His Class Reunion

| September 21, 2023

Protime is showing his age here, but the show must go on as they say.  His 50th high school class reunion is coming up and as much as he’d like to go (he’s never been to any of the prior ones), he just can’t pull the trigger.  Protime knows if he and the lovely Mrs. P go, he’ll be swamped by middle-aged autograph seekers and self-proclaimed football aficionados.  Additionally, some of his ex-girlfriends may embarrass the proud prognosticator by asking him to dance to a Carpenter song, or even worse, Alice Cooper’s School’s Out, which by the way, was the class song suggested by Protime all those years ago.

No, Protime is going to forego that Friday golf outing for a high school football game.  Then he is going to forego the formal Saturday get together for a quiet night of dining and a movie with Mrs. Protime.  Maybe they’ll watch a double feature like Remember the Titans and some Alfred Hitchcock thriller like Rear Window, North by Northwest, or Vertigo.  Protime will leave that up to Mrs. P. of course.  The Class of ’73 had its dreams and Protime is still living his with (1) Mrs. P and (2) covering high school football.

Last week Protime went 23-3 elevating his 2023 rate of accuracy to 82.7% (83-17-1).  This week’s pigskin predictions of 24 games includes eleven contests where both teams are undefeated.  So, on with the Super Surmiser’s scintillating psychokinetic selections of the week.

Games where both teams are undefeated:

Pittsburgh Central Catholic 35 North Allegheny 24 – This is a huge game in D-7.  Both of these 6A teams can gauge how good they are and how good the other team is.  The Central Catholic Vikings are ranked #2 by PFN and they take this game over the #3 ranked N.A. Tigers.  There will be a rematch in the playoffs.

Southern Columbia 28 Danville 21 – When PFN’s #1 team in AA (SoCol) meets the #4 team in AAA something has to give.  In this case, after the field is cleared of Tigers and Ironmen, it’s the Tigers who will be found to prevail but barely.

Belle Vernon 17 Thomas Jefferson 13 – Protime believes T.J. can win, but his crystal ball says Belle Vernon.  It has been said Leopards can’t change their spots, so they’ll keep their #1 ranking in 3A while the T.J. Jaguars should maintain their #3 spot in 4A.  This game should live up to its billing as a classic spotted cat fight.

Bishop McDevitt 42 Cedar Cliff 27 – McDevitt has played some really good out of state teams to sharpen their play.  The Colts of Cedar Cliff will be a test, but the Crusaders’ offense led by QB Stone Saunders and WR Rico Scott are just too much.

Berlin-Brothersvalley 20 Northern Bedford 18 – Let’s say it up front.  Protime flipped a coin.  The last time he flipped a coin involving a game with No. Bedford, he picked West Branch and lost.  (Don’t hold it against Protime coach.)  Both teams have very good quarterbacks, defense, etc.  So, the coin says the #10 Mountaineers (2A) are victorious over the #4 Panthers (1A) in this heated contest.

Parkland 24 Allentown Central Catholic 17 – Oh boy.  D-11 fans should be treated to a real doozy here.  Protime is going with the Trojans, but the Vikings will give Parkland all kinds of fits before it’s over.

Elizabeth Forward 21 Knoch 14 – The Knoch Knights have a QB who has thrown for 850 yards and a receiver that has over 400 yards in catches, but the Warriors of Elizabeth Forward has a real good defense.  And defense usually wins these types of games.

Canton 27 South Williamsport 23 – So. Williamsport in District 4 is the site of this contest that finds the Warriors edging the Mountaineers.

Wyomissing 35 ELCO 21 – Give the Spartans their due.  They seem to reload every year.  Could it be because they have one of the best coaches in the state in the person of Bob Wolfrum?  This week they beat a good ELCO Raider team.

Peters Township 31 Upper St. Clair 21 – Protime’s sources say the Indians of Peters Township may be the best 5A team from Pittsburgh this year.  We will see, but this week they give the U.S.C. Panthers their first loss.

East Pennsboro 26 Greencastle-Antrim 13 – The Panthers go to 5-0 and the Blue Devils drop to 4-1.

The Other Games:

Bishop Guilfoyle 22 Central (Martinsburg) 21 – Upset special in this one as the Marauders take down the 4-0 Scarlet Dragons.

Notre Dame Green Pond 25 Palmerton 20 – The Crusaders ground the Blue Bombers in this nip and tuck affair.

Windber 20 North Star 12 – North Star is doing well this year, but the Cougars suffer their second loss to an unbeaten Windber Rambler squad.

Perkiomen Valley 31 Owen J. Roberts 17 – The Vikings take out the Wildcats with a second half rally.

Port Allegheny 21 Brockway 17 – It will be extremely hard for the Rovers of Brockway to recover from the let-down of being upset last week.  That gives the Gators a chance that they will take advantage of with their formidable offensive and defensive lines.

Mid Valley 14 Susquehanna Community 13 – Protime has never predicted a game involving these two teams that he can remember.  Both teams are 3-1, so Protime flipped a coin and the Spartans appear to be the victor over the Sabers.

Eisenhower 18 Lakeview 14 – This is another pick ‘em game that Protime decided to consult the crystal ball.  It could go either way, but the ball says take the Knights by four over the Sailors.

Southern Lehigh 40 Blue Mountain 34 – In this high scoring match, it’ll be the Spartans scooting by the Eagles by six.

Mount Union 28 Moshannon Valley 26 – A don’t miss thriller if you live in the area.  Reminiscing back to the Middle Ages we find the Trojans just barely conquering the Black Knights.

Downingtown East 38 Kennett 20 – The Cougars improve to 5-0 and in Protime’s personal opinion is the team to beat in 6A in District 1.  However, the Blue Demons of Kennett won’t go away quietly.

Farrell 29 Hickory 17 – Another test for Farrell and the Steelers will pass with high marks by swatting the Hornets.

Wyoming 42 Hanover 24 – The Warriors stay unblemished by slaying the Hawkeyes.

Penn Cambria 20 Central Cambria 17 – In the battle of Cambrias, Penn’s Panthers will best Central’s Red Devils.
