Protime Predictions (Protime’s Championship Seasons)

Protime remembers the old electric football game where you lined up your individual men on the board, gave one the little felt football, hit the on switch, the board vibrated, and off they all went in every which direction.  When a player from the opposing team touched the ball carrier, he was tackled.  You just hoped the guy with the ball didn’t get turned around and go backwards.  Well, Protime used to adjust the bottoms of his players and sometimes angle their starting position somewhat so they would go faster and straighter.  Protime was the neighborhood champ and legend for his electric football prowess.

Then there was the Foto-Electric Football game, where there were sheets for defense and offense.  The offense picked a play to run and the defense picked a defense that was strong against certain plays.  You pulled back a cardboard curtain and a light from underneath showed how far the play went before lines from the two sheets intersected which indicated a tackle.  If they didn’t intersect, the play went for a touchdown.  (Protime still has that game and it brought a lot of pleasure playing it with Protime Junior for many years.)  Protime became the household champ over Brother Protime although there were many an argument on whether the lines intersected or not.

That championship time is also here for Pennsylvania high school football.  The Swanky Swami, that Predictor of Predictors has all the goods on each game and will be covering them for PFN in some capacity.  For full previews of each game look in the news, playoff, or district section of the PFN website.  Protime went 11-1 last week and sits at 281-88 (.764) for the year.  And now ladies and gentlemen, the title game picks:

Thursday’s Games:

Union 12-3 vs. Steelton-Highspire 13-1 – This is a first-time appearance for the Union Scotties, while the Steel High Steamrollers have 3 championships in their trophy case.  The quarterbacks for both squads will be the key.  Braylon Thomas of Union has 1,198 yards passing and 1,475 yards rushing.  He’s thrown for 13 TDs and scored 20 himself.  Steel High’s Alex Erby has rifled the rock for 3,005 yards and 39 touchdowns.  Protime predicts it will be Steelton 39 and Union 36.

Aliquippa 13-0 vs. Bishop McDevitt 12-1 – This game could be the best of the weekend.  It is a rematch from last year’s championship tilt won by the Quips 34-27.  Both squads are loaded with talent that will play at the next level.  Each team has big physical linemen and excellent skill players.  To a casual fan, they may think they are watching a college game.  Aliquippa’s QB Quentin Goode has 1,909 yards passing and 22 touchdowns.  Quips RB Tiqwai Hayes has traversed the field for 1,911 yards and scored 32 TDs.  For the Crusaders, Protime has to mention 4 offensive players.  QB Stone Saunders has pitched the pigskin for 3,419 yards and 49 touchdowns.  He has two favorite receivers in Tyshawn Russell and Rico Scott.  Russell has 57 receptions for 1,213 yards and 18 TDs.  Scott has 63 grabs for 1,152 yards and 17 scores.  If you think all McDevitt does is pass, think again.  RB Marquese Williams has raced around the field for 1,378 yards and 26 touchdowns.  This game goes to the wire.  McDevitt 24 Quippa 21.

Friday’s Games:

Westinghouse 14-0 vs. Southern Columbia 12-3 – This game should be a barn-burner.  It’s the first trip to the finals by Westinghouse and the 21st appearance for Southern.  In fact, this is the Tigers’ eighth straight final, wining the past 5 in a row and 12 overall.  QB Keyshawn Morsillo is the straw that stirs the Bulldog offense.  He has thrown for 2,844 yards and 41 touchdowns, plus he has run for 810 yards and 18 scores.  WR Sincere Smith has hauled in 40+ passes for over 1,300 yards and 22 TDs.  Braeden Wisloski has 1,804 yards rushing with 24 touchdowns and Wes Barnes has 1,304 yards and 16 TDs for the Tigers’ famous and deadly Wing-T offense.  Westinghouse 26 Southern Columbia 21.

(Coach Donta Green has been with Westinghouse for 4 years now and sports a 39-6 record.  He has changed the culture of the program and demands the players to do well scholastically.  On top of that he has rules for speaking, dressing, and acting at practice and in public.  Because of this, the Bulldog roster has grown from 20 some kids his first year to 55 presently.  Kudos to Coach Green!  Jim Roth is a living legend and has been head coach at Southern since 1984.  He is the winningest coach in PA history with 483 wins, only 67 losses, and a couple of ties.  Obviously, he has changed the culture at Southern because before he took over the school board had thought of replacing the football program with soccer.)

Pine-Richland 12-3 vs. Imhotep 10-2 – Here is another match-up that has the making of a classic game.  Pine-Richland has won 11 consecutive games with Ryan Palmieri at QB.  He has rushed for 1,741 yards and 24 TDs.  He will pass too and has 977 yards with 9 TD tosses.  RB Ethan Pillar has ground out 1,241 yards and 16 TDs for the Rams.  The Tep Panthers have a good one at QB too.  Mikal Davis has over 1,750 yards passing.  The defense, led by Jahsear Whittington and Rahmir Stewart, are 4th in PA giving up only 88 points all year.  Just like Penn Trafford last year, Pine-Richland finds a way to win.  Pine-Richland 17 Imhotep 13.

Saturday’s Games:

Belle Vernon 11-2 vs. Neumann-Goretti 11-3 – Neither of these teams have ever been here before.  The B.V. Leopards are paced by Quinton Martin who has rushed for 1,208 yards and 22 TDs to date.  He averages 9.6 yards a carry and has scored 30 touchdowns total.  With the Saints’ star, Shawn Battle not being able to play, QB Mekhi Wharton will need to play an even bigger role.  Wharton has thrown the football for over 1,500 yards and 17 TDs.  The defenses may play a big role in this contest.  Sam Hobbs leads the Saint ‘D’ while Adam Lacarte is the big cat for the Leopards.  Belle Vernon beats Neumann-Goretti 24-22.

Harrisburg 11-2 vs. St. Josephs Prep 11-1 – Claws and talons will be flailing in this one.  The Harrisburg Cougars will come at St. Joes with a pounding ground game that features Makhai Hopkins who has 1,312 yards and 16 TDs.  Then watch out for their passing attack with QB Shawn Lee (1,591 yards & 16 TDs) and WR/Athlete Kyle Williams Jr. (48 catches-967 yards-7 TDs).  The Prep Hawks have a good one of their own at QB.  Samaj Jones has over 2,200 yards passing with 28 TD tosses in an up-tempo offense.  The only blemish on St. Joes record is to the #7 team in the USA, St. Thomas Aquinas.  And the Hawks led at one point in the third quarter before falling to the Florida powerhouse.  St. Joes 31 Harrisburg 23.
