Protime has a new hobby besides listening to oldies like Frankie Valli, the Ronettes, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles. It is watching old movies. To most of you young whipper-snappers old movies would be flicks from the 1990s or even early 2000s. No, Protime is talking movies from the 1930s through the 1950s, movies that are really old like anywhere from 70 to over 90 years old. Yes, indeed, they did make movies that long ago. And there were some excellent ones too.
Now Protime is a dreamer and he sometimes thinks what it would have been like to be the leading man to the likes of Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Gene Tierney, Katherine Hepburn, or Barbara Stanwyck. But then he thinks Mrs. P. probably wouldn’t approve of the smooching scenes because after all, there is only one leading lady in Protime’s life and that’s the lovely Mrs. P. Besides, how would he like it if she was the starlet to such leading men as Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Tyrone Power, Paul Newman, or Henry Fonda. Still there is nothing like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, On the Waterfront, etc.
Speaking of there being nothing like, there is nothing like Protime. Mrs. P. would echo that with an eyeroll, a shake of the head, and a comment like ‘thank goodness.’ The Master of Football Premonitions is batting at a .785 pace this year. Here are the quarterfinal prognostications. (There will be no previews as you can find one for all the games at the PFN website.)
Class 6A
Downingtown West 14 North Penn 10 – This one can go either way. Protime feels the Whippets have the tiniest of edges playing the Knights at home.
Pittsburgh Central Catholic 24 State College 21 – This game should be closer than some think with the Little Lions having a legitimate chance. Having said that, Protime envisions the Vikings coming out on top with all that talent they have.
St. Joes Prep 35 Parkland 13 – Parkland’s Trojans have the team to win the east this year, except for the Hawks of St. Joes who have another phenomenal team this year.
Harrisburg 22 Wilson West Lawn 14 – The Cougars are playing as good as anyone right now, so they will beat the Bulldogs who are a very good team also.
Class 5A
Pine-Richland 17 Peters Township 14 – If Protime could see one game this weekend, it would be this one. The winner of this game will be the favorite to take home the state championship trophy in a couple of weeks. Protime gives the Rams the edge here because they remember that the Indians beat them last year and make no mistake, Pine-Richland is better than last year.
Roman Catholic 34 Hollidaysburg 21 – This will be a good game also, but in the end the Cahillites have too much talent for the Golden Tigers to overcome.
Bishop McDevitt 27 Exeter Township 21 – Give the Crusaders their due, they played a tougher schedule this year at 5A and succeeded. But the Exeter Eagles will be no pushover and if taken lightly could win this contest.
West Chester Rustin 20 Springfield-Delco 14 – The Golden Knights have been knocking on the door to the state finals for a few years now. Could this be their year? The Delco Cougars might have something to say about that, but Protime thinks Rustin wins by six.
Class 4A
Bonner-Prendie 28 Pope John Paul II 24 – If Protime could see a second game this weekend, this would be it. The winner has a good shot of making the title game. In Protime’s mind, it’ll come down to who Is more determined and Protime has the Friars eking out the victory over the Golden Panthers.
Thomas Jefferson 35 Clearfield 12 – This is one of but three games that involve both teams being undefeated. The Jaguars under Coach Cherpak are going to be very tough to beat this year as a good Bison eleven are about to find out.
Southern Lehigh 27 Juniata 23 – The Spartans will have an extremely tough time with the upstart Indians who pulled maybe the surprise of the year last week when they beat Shamokin.
Lampeter-Strasburg 28 Wyomissing 26 – This game will even be closer than the first time they played, but the result will be the same with the Pioneers downing the Spartans.
Class 3A
Hickory 31 Penn Cambria 28 – Protime has the Hornets just being able to buzz by the Panthers in a dandy of a game.
Northwestern Lehigh 25 Scranton Prep 20 – These are two dynamite teams and it is a shame they can’t meet a little later, but here it is. The Tigers of NW Lehigh will not be mauling the Cavaliers, but they will scratch out the ‘W’ to advance.
Central Valley 21 Avonworth 14 – The Antelopes beat the CV Warriors by the same score earlier this year. Protime has the Warriors returning the favor in this hotly contested contest.
Danville 34 Bermudian Springs 10 – The Ironmen are too strong for the high-flying Eagles. But congrats goes out to Bermudian Springs for their great year.
Class 2A
Troy 40 Bedford 24 – Bedford’s Bisons was able to handle the Steelton-Highspire squad last week, but the Troy Trojans are a different animal. Protime is predicting a close game for awhile before Troy kicks it up a notch.
Central Clarion 28 Cambria Heights 14 – This is the second game featuring both teams with an unblemished record and Protime will be there! Central Clarion is one of the highest scoring teams in the state, but Cambria Heights will hold them down somewhat. The problem is that the CC Wildcats have an elite defense too and that spells doom for the Highlanders.
Williams Valley 27 Riverside 26 – This may be one of the better games of the week. Protime has the Vikings beating the Vikings so he can’t go wrong, right?
Seton LaSalle 27 South Park 24 – Another good game here with the Rebels coming back to get the win against the very tough South Park Eagles.
Class 1A
Port Allegany 41 Wilmington 28 – Protime will be in attendance to watch these two go at it. Both are run first teams so it should be a quick game. Protime’s gut says to go with the Gators to defeat the Greyhounds.
Westinghouse 22 Bishop Guilfoyle 17 – This will not be easy for the Bulldogs as the Marauders are well-coached and are quite good. Remember when BG beat Clairton a few years back when no one gave them a chance? But the ‘House has enough to come out the victor when the clock stops.
Clairton 20 Ft. Cherry 13 – This is a game many are looking forward to and is the third game with two unbeatens. Da Bears are back and in a big way as they have the top defense in the state. The Rangers are no slouches led by an all-state QB, but Protime just can’t go against Clairton.
Muncy 36 Delone Catholic 20 – Delone seemed to fly under the radar this year, while Muncy was expected to be good they may have been underestimated too. The Indians of Muncy appear to Protime to be too much for the Squires.
