Kirtland, Ohio 30 Central Clarion 7 – Kirtland showed why they are one of the top Division VI teams in Ohio year in and year out. Their coaching is phenomenal and they have a nice system on offense that is hard to stop. Central Clarion did a good job on defense until the 4th quarter when they wore down. At one point in the 3rd quarter, Central Clarion trailed 14-7. Central Clarion Coach Dave Eggleton says playing teams like Kirtland will definitely prepare his team for the playoffs more than playing someone where the game is over at the half. Carter Hindman replaced the legend, Jase Ferguson, at quarterback and did a nice job against a very, very good defense. If they stay healthy, expect the Wildcats to shoot for another District Nine title and then shoot for another state playoff run. One more shout out to Kirtland’s Hornets and Coach Tiger LaVerde who was nothing but class when he was interviewed. He won’t admit it, but he is a legend too. His record at Kirtland, as he starts his 20th season at the helm, is now 245-21. Kirtland is currently ranked #2 in their division.
DuBois 56 General McLane 35 – The game was wild from the start. It pitted McLane’s fast-paced offense against the passing attack of DuBois’ Trey Wingard. When we say fast-paced, we mean fast-paced. After the play is whistled dead, the Lancers immediately line up and snap the ball again. It keeps teams off balance and out of proper alignment and keeps teams from substituting. The game was a see-saw affair, but it came down to McLane’s defense not being able to find a way to pressure Wingard nor cover his receivers as the Beavers kept scoring. The Lancers, although they tied the game in the 3rd quarter at 35, never were able to get on tract their last four drives as DuBois figured it out on defense. If not for allowing DuBois’ Jaxson Hanzely to return a kickoff for a touchdown as time ran out before the half, McLane would have taken the lead in the third and things may have been different. But that’s football. We look for both teams to have good years and quite possibly make noise in the playoffs, again if everyone stays healthy. Side Note: We said in our preview that we thought DuBois had never played General McLane before, but DuBois Asst. Coach Clicker Clark said before the game that McLane held a 3-1 advantage. We checked and he was right.
Punxsutawney 31 Brockway 0 – We figured Punxsy might win but not by shutting out such a potent offense as Brockway’s. Coach Brandon Snyder switched the ‘D’ to a 3-4 this year because of the talent he has. The Chucks scored in every quarter to slowly choke the life out of the Rovers. The two highlights of the game were the 55-yard third down touchdown pass from Maddox Hetrick to Logan Moore and Owen Roken’s 44-yard field goal near the end of the game which set a new school record. Punxsy is loaded as they return quite a bit from last year’s playoff team. A huge test looms this Friday for the Chucks as they travel to DuBois to take on the Beavers. We expect Brockway to regroup and move on. They had some good chances against Punxsy but could not execute properly in order to capitalize. The Rovers will be a different and stronger team at year’s end. If things go well for Brockway, they could win a couple state playoff games. They have a good offense, they have a bigger line than last year, and they have the coaching.
