The Punxsutawney Chucks pitched a shutout on defense and scored in every quarter on offense to beat the visiting Rovers of Brockway 31-0 Saturday evening at the famous Jack LaMarca Stadium in Punxsutawney.

Head coach Brandon Snyder stated this after the game, “We’re happy with the defense.  We moved to the 3-4 this year.  We felt like we had a lot of speed on the field this year and we have a lot of guys that can fly to the ball.  We were able to put that on display a little bit tonight.  Can’t be a better start than a shutout victory.”

After forcing a Brockway three and out, the Punxsy Chucks scored on their first possession of the 2025 season by driving 65 yards rather easily in just 4 plays.  A six-yard pass from Zaden Gould to Logan Moore began the drive.  Then Jordan Rutan ran three times in a row for 5, 33, and 21 yards respectively.  The 21-yarder was the touchdown run to put Punxsy into the lead and they never looked back as the saying goes.

The Chucks second score occurred in the 2nd period when Beau Thomas finished off a 77-yard drive with a 5-yard power run.  Thomas is 6’2” and weighs 225 pounds.  The highlight of that possession was a 32-yard pass from Maddox Hetrick to Max Presloid.  Punxsy led 14-0 at the half and the defense had held a potent Rover offense to just 58 yards.

The third quarter saw the Chucks score when Hetrick hit a streaking Logan Moore over the middle for a 55-yard touchdown at the 6:19 mark.  The final home team TD was when Thomas capped off a 79-yard drive by plunging in from the two-yard line.  His 22-yard jaunt and Hetrick’s 27-yard scramble were the big plays along the way.  That last score gave Punxsy a four touchdown cushion at 28-0 with 4:54 left in the game.

Logan Moore far right in red scores on a long pass from Maddox Hetrick.

Kicker Owen Roken not only nailed the four PATs he attempted for Punxsy, but then he set a new school record by booting a 44-yard field goal late in the 4th quarter.  The old record was held by Peyton Hetrick.

For the Chucks, Beau Thomas led all rushers with 86 yards gained.  Maddox Hetrick threw for 190 yards and a touchdown by going 8 for 15.  Logan Moore caught 4 passes for 78 yards and a score.  Coach Snyder had big praise for his secondary for their coverage of some talented receivers, and his defensive line for putting a lot of pressure on an all-state quarterback.  Punxsy’s defense recorded six sacks in the game.  Brockway travels to 1-0 DuBois for a big contest next week.

Maddox Hetrick #2 with some room off around the right side he goes.

Brockway had 174 total yards including minus 8 rushing.  Aiden Patten was 20 for 33 and had 182 yards passing on the night with one interception.  Brockway will host 0-1 St. Marys next week.
