PIAA District AA District VI Quarterfinal

Southern Huntingdon Rockets #5 vs Richland Rams #3

The Richland Rams cruised to an easy win in the opening round of the District VI  playoffs last night with a 50-16 victory over visiting Southern Huntingdon. The Rams led 42-0 at halftime to invoke the mercy rule for the entire second half. The visiting Rockets had 10 first half possessions but could come up with only one first down. The Rams scored six touchdowns on their ten possessions. Both teams started out misfiring on offense. The Rockets couldn’t get out of their own way. The Rams Kellan Stahl was missing open receivers for most of the first quarter. Once Stahl started using his feet, his passing started to improve. He ended the game with over 250 yards in total offense.

The Rockets went three and out to start the game and then fumble the punt. Three plays later Stahl scrambled 19 yards for the first of his three rushing touchdowns.

The Rockets next drive lasted three plays and went backwards. The Rams starting at midfield after the punt turned it over on downs when Stahl missed a wide open Grifffin Larue. The Rockets returned the favor losing a yard on four plays as they also turned it over on downs. The Rams quickly moved into the red zone before turning it over on downs again. Stahl missing a wide open Larue and misfiring on a screen pass. The Rockets starting at their own eight, managed 2 yards on three plays and punted. The punt went straight up and than started bouncing back towards the end zone. The Rams fourth drive started at the Rockets 20 and ended with Stahl’s second rushing touchdown.

The Rockets next drive lasted two plays and ended when Demont Johnson recovered a fumble at the Southern Huntingdon 15. The first quarter ended with the Rams up 14 and in good field position.

Larue who had just missed a couple of first quarter touchdowns was rewarded by Coach Brandon Bailey and scored on a short jet sweep.

The Rockets next drive three plays minus 11 yards including a sack. The Rams scored 18 seconds later when Stahl ran over and through the Rockets defense for a great 45 yard touchdown run. The Rockets went three and out again. The Rams first play after the punt was a beautiful 62 yard pass and catch from Stahl to Sam Penna. Four plays later the Rockets turned it over on downs again when quarterback Nate Myers was stuffed on a fourth and five draw play. This drive ended with another Rams touchdown as Stahl hit a diving Grayden Lewis in the left corner of the end zone.

The Rockets next drive saw them gain their only first down of the half before turning it over on downs. Both teams would turn it over on downs before Richland missed a field goal as the half ended.

The second half went quickly, thanks to the mercy rule. The Rockets attempted three onside kicks. Richland recovered the first and drove 49 yards for their seventh and final touchdown. Senior lineman Aiden Thomas scored from six yards out doing his best “Refrigerator Perry” impersonation. The Rockets scored two fourth quarter touchdowns as their starters were able to punch it in against the Rams backups. The game ended with the score Richland 50 and Southern Huntingdon 16.
