On Saturday night in the pouring rain at Mansion Park, the Richland Rams avenged their regular season loss to the Bishop McCort Crushers and captured the 2025 District 6 2A Championship by a score of 14-7.
The offenses started the game with solid drives, but both ended with two failed 4th down conversions. It was the defense of Richland that would get on the board first. Arnold Mugerwa picked off Angelo Gallucci and took it to the house to put Richland up 7-0 with a minute to play in the first quarter.
Bishop McCort punted the ball on their next offensive drive which became the theme for the second quarter of play. As the rain began to fall heavily, both teams punted a combined five times to end the first half with Richland up 7-0.
To start the 3rd quarter, Marquez Gordon stripped Mugerwa and set up the Crushers deep inside of Richland territory. The Ram defense stood tall though, and stopped McCort on 4th down to take over on their own thirteen yard line with nine minutes to play in the third quarter.
The two teams traded punts once more, but when Richland took over inside their own forty it looked to be a promising drive for the Rams. Junior running back Grayson Mahla, had multiple big chunk plays and set the Rams inside the McCort five yard line. The Crushers dodged a massive bullet and the drive came up empty, as the Rams missed a chip shot field goal with nine minutes left in the game.
Gallucci marched McCort down the field and handed it off to running back Brady Page for a touchdown to tie the game with five minutes to play in the third quarter. With the momentum all in McCort’s favor, the Crushers looked to stop Richland and get the ball back.
The Rams had other plans. Sophomore quarterback Jake Regan led Richland down the field and hit Mugerwa to jump back in front with just over four minutes to play. McCort needed an answer but did not get one. Jonathan Delia was stuffed around the forty yard line like he had been all game and the Crushers turned the ball over on downs with under three minutes to go.
Richland had a chance to ice the game on the next set of down, but failed to convert on fourth down giving McCort one last chance to knot the game up. Gallucci had two big plays, hitting Page and Josh Spontak to move closer to the endzone, giving Crusher fans a sliver of hope under with under a minute left. Sophomore Alex Bond called game and removed any doubt that Richland would win with a game sealing interception in the endzone, securing the District 6 title for the Rams.
After talking with senior lineman Brodie Hollis after the game, he said that “This was the greatest game of his life.” It was very evident how much this meant to everyone on this team after two heartbreaking loses the last two years in the title game. Arnold Mugerwa said, “This means everything.”
For the Rams it truly did mean everything. They are the 2025 District 6 champions, winning 14-7 and advancing to play Farrell in the quarterfinals of the 2A state tournament.
