Riverside advances to 2A State Quarterfinals

After the first touchdown from Lansdale Catholic, it looked like it was going to be a long night for the Riverside defense. However, after the opening drive touchdown, the defense did not give up a single point and forced four turnovers. Chase Taddonio ran for two touchdowns in the second half overcoming a 7-0 halftime deficit to take a 17-7 victory over Lansdale Catholic at Mid Valley High School. “Our guys were incredibly resilient tonight. The first half was really tough for us. We gave up a big play early on but despite that, our defense was relentless tonight.” Vikings head coach Harry Armstrong said.

The Crusaders started with the ball and on a third and seven, Yeboa Cobbold went to Nick O’Brien for a 66 yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead with 10:53 remaining in the first quarter. Riverside had the best chances of the first half to score. Getting to the Lansdale Catholic 35 yard line and attempted a fake punt but was short of the first down marker. The Crusaders botched a snap on the second play of the ensuing drive and the Vikings recovered. However, Riverside was forced to punt and we went to halftime with Lansdale Catholic up 7-0.

The Vikings started with the ball but went three and out. The Riverside defense got a sack then got a fumble recovery at the Crusader 16 yard line. Taddonio ran the ball four times, scoring from three yards out to tie the game at 7 with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Riverside defense got another fumble recovery at their own 48 yard line. The Vikings drove down the field, they faced a fourth and 5 at the Lansdale Catholic 24. Taddonio went to Richie Kostoff for a 21 yard gain to the three yard line. At the start of the fourth quarter, Taddonio scored from five yards out to give Riverside a 14-7 lead with 11:55 remaining in the game.

The Crusaders looked to tie the game but the Vikings defense forced them to go three and out. Riverside got the ball back with 9:50 left. They were unable to score but pinned Lansdale Catholic to their own five line. On a third and 3, Cobbold’s pass ended up incomplete and were forced to punt. The Vikings got the ball back with 4:10 left at the Crusader 23 yard line. They got to the four yard line and attempted a 24 yard field goal by Santino D’Amico and made it 17-7 with 1:08 to go. Lansdale Catholic’s last chance at a comeback was intercepted by JJ Rogers as Riverside took the 17-7 victory over Lansdale Catholic as they advance to the 2A State Quarterfinals.
