Riverside Survives and Advances to State Semifinals with victory over Williams Valley

Within 2 and a half minutes of the second quarter, the game completely changed, Riverside recovered back to back fumbles and turned the two turnovers into two touchdowns which made it 28-7 at halftime. Williams Valley didn’t go away easily. They made it 28-21 with 10:49 to go but Riverside held on to get the 28-21 victory over Williams Valley to advance to the PIAA 2A State Semifinals. “Our finish to the first half was incredible.” Riverside head coach Harry Armstrong. “It was an incredible outburst of making plays. Starting with our defense making plays.” Armstrong continued. The Riverside defense forced 6 turnovers, including back-to back fumbles in the second quarter.

Williams Valley started with the ball and drove all the way to the Riverside 27 yard line until a fumble ended the drive. After both teams traded punts. Riverside got on the board first as Chase Taddonio found Richie Kostoff for a 34 yard touchdown to make it 7-0 with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter.

On the Williams Valley drive, it looked like they were going to tie the game on a 74 yard touchdown pass but the play was negated by a holding call. Three plays later, Riverside recovered another fumble and got great field position. It took Riverside three plays as Taddonio scored on a 46 yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 41 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Williams Valley went on an eight play drive that ended with Brady Shomper going to Evan Achenbach for a 10 yard touchdown to cut Riverside’s lead to 14-7 with 8:53 remaining in the second quarter. Riverside drove down the field but the drive ended Taddonio’s pass was intercepted by Shomper in the end zone.

Williams Valley looked to tie the game. They got into Riverside territory but a fumble ended the drive. First play after the fumble, Taddonio found JJ Rogers for 21 yards then a facemask penalty moved the ball to the Williams Valley 12 yard line. Taddonio found Carmello Barnett for the 12 yard score to make it 21-7 with 34 seconds to go in the second quarter. Riverside’s defense then forced another fumble on the first play of the Williams Valley drive and returned to the Williams Valley nine yard line. On second and goal, Taddonio found Rogers for the touchdown and a 28-7 lead with seven seconds left and that’s the score at halftime.

The score remained the same until Williams Valley went on a long 19 play drive that ended with Shomper scoring from 12 yards out on a fourth and four to cut the lead down to 28-14 with nine seconds left in the third quarter. The drive started with an interception by Kian Krzyzanowski at their own 20 yard line.

After a three and out by Riverside that started the fourth quarter, Fletcher Thompson scored from 66 yards out to make it a one score game at 28-21 with 10:49 to go in the fourth quarter. The teams traded punts. Williams Valley got the ball back with 4:19 left. They faced a fourth and 8 at midfield. Pass was intercepted by Quinn Puchilowski with 2:54 remaining in the game.

Riverside ended up going three and out and Williams Valley got the ball back. First play of the drive, Shomper went to Krzyzanowski for a 49 yard reception to the Riverside 19 yard line. However, an intentional grounding on first down moved the ball to the 34 yard line. After an incompletion on second down, Shomper was sacked by Grayson Dupree. In fourth down, the pass was completed but short of the first down to give Riverside the 28-21 victory over Williams Valley. Riverside will play District 4 Champion Troy in the State Semifinals.
