Oakmont – It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win.
Those were the words from Riverview head coach Trevor George following his team’s 34-19 victory over Bethlehem-Center.
“You have to take a win any way you can get them,” said George. “Every week is a battle. There are a thousand things we need to get better at, and the kids know that. We need to clean up some stuff, and you’ll have that early on in the first game. They have 24 hours to be happy about it, then it’s on to the next one.”
Despite six turnovers, the Raiders rolled off the game’s final three touchdowns to secure an opening week victory.
Things got off to an inopportune start when Nicholas Miller intercepted Connor Kmetz on the Raiders’ third snap of the season, leading to Enzo Brown’s 6-yard run following a 32-yard drive.
Despite turning the ball over on the second possession as well, the Raiders answered in time when they got enough pressure on the Bulldogs’ punter, DeSean Whipkey, to force him to pull the ball down and take a 13-yard loss back to their 15-yard line.
Faced with 4th-and-goal from the 9-yard line, Kmetz found a wide-open Dom Williams to even the contest at seven following a quarter of play.
Bethlehem-Center took the lead back mid-way through the second quarter following Cyncere Cruse taking a punt back to the Raiders’ 17-yard line, where Tegan Veatch scored on the following play.
In the final minutes of the first half, following the Bulldogs’ score, Riverview drove from its 43 to the 8-yard line, where they faced 2nd-and-goal only to see Blake Stopko intercept a tipped pass.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as on the next play, Miles Sigal stripped the ball from Homer Headlee and returned eight yards for a touchdown with just under two minutes remaining in the half.
“We never get discouraged when we get behind,” he said. “We’ve been down several times before and came back. We play at a disadvantage all the time. I knew I had to get my brothers back, so when I saw them gang tackle and he went down, I noticed he only had one hand on the ball. So I was able to make the play for my team.”
Riverview led 14-13 at intermission.
Miles Sigal had a monster game on defense as he had a pair of strip sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
“It feels good because we’ve been preparing for weeks now,” Sigal said. “Our coaches have been behind us the entire time. We made a lot of mistakes in this game, but we picked it up and executed in the end. Our jobs are not done because we have a lot to fix. I’ve been working hard all summer with my teammates; we’re all down on the field together, building up chemistry. I couldn’t have done it without my brothers. It’s iron sharpens iron, we’re always working hard together, and my success is their success.”
The Bulldogs did their best to try and swing the game back in their favor, coming out of the locker room with Cruse taking the second-half kickoff back 82 yards.
Less than three minutes later, Lukas Duncan scored on a 9-yard run following a 65-yard drive to give Riverview the lead for good.
Defensively, the Raiders took the game over and limited Bethlehem-Center to only 31 yards of offense in the second half.
“Defensively, they played a great game,” said George. “Big players make big plays, and between Miles and Jack Reynolds coming off the edge to apply pressure was huge for us, and I’m really proud of those guys,”
On their next drive, the Raiders drove 55 yards in three plays with Rio Stotts catching a 12-yard touchdown from Kmetz.
Connor Kmetz completed 11 of 18 passes for 154 yards with two touchdowns, but also threw four interceptions. Stotts caught six balls for 65 yards, while Max Kratt added four catches for 80 yards and 58 on the ground.
Though they did turn the ball over twice in the second half, the final two quarters were much more stable for Riverview as they gained 151 rushing yards compared to negative nine in the first half.
“There were a few tweaks and adjustments we made at halftime,” said George. “Then the kids went out and executed. That was the biggest thing: if they can perform exactly what you’re trying to tell them, that’s awesome to see. They hit the holes well, and our linemen did a great job adjusting.”
In the fourth quarter, Max Kratt scored on a 1-yard run following a 24-yard jaunt by Williams to put the finishing touches on the victory.
Riverview will look to keep the momentum going next Saturday afternoon when they host Valley. Bethlehem-Center will try to bounce back against Leechburg next Friday night.
