Mao Howell rushes Friday night against Wilson

Roman Catholic beat Wilson on Friday night 46-15. A steady running game and a stout defense stymied the Wilson team. Roman Catholic forced 4 fumbles and 3 interceptions in the win. Led by running backs Mao Howell and Jamir Robertson Roman was able to control the game after a slow 1st Quarter. Head Coach Rick Prete on his team “We start slow for some reason, we need to get out of that, but our kids are resilient”.

Wilson scored early when Cam Jones scored on a 3-year rushing touchdown. After a 3 and out by Roman Catholic Cam Jones returned a 77-yard punt return for Wilson. Wilson had a 12-0 lead. Roman then responded with three successful touchdown drives. Mao Howell rushed it in from 36 yards out and 1 yard out to tie the game. Tyseer Demark then caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Semaj Beals and Roman was up 18-12 at the half.

In the 2nd half, Jamir Robertson rushed it in from 37 yards out for Roman. Wilson later responded with a field goal to trim the lead to 26-15, but an interception and return for a touchdown by Jah-Jah Boyd of Roman sealed the game. It was a spectacular play by Boyd. He returned it for 90 yards.

Roman Catholic got 161 yards rushing from Jamir Robertson and 153 yards rushing from Mao Howell. The two-headed backfield was able to run the ball behind a huge offensive line and control the line of scrimmage. Especially in the second half when they took a commanding lead.  Prete on running the ball “We take pride in running the football. We have to run the ball as a team”.

One of the themes of the night was the defensive line for Roman Catholic. They harassed Wilson all game. The unit is led by Penn State commit Jameial Lyons who had 6 tackles and also 2 tackles for loss in the victory. Lyons had this to say about falling behind early “In a game of football you need to keep your composure and we did that”. He also talked about how he gets all the coverage, but that it is a team sport. Lyons said “The talk is about me, but I don’t like that it is a team sport”.

Roman Catholic plays in one of the toughest leagues in the state, so they know they need to get better. Coach Prete felt confident that they would get better. This is what he had to say about his team “We have to get better. We are definitely going to get better as the season goes on”.

Semaj Beals goes back to pass for Roman Catholic Friday night.
