Guys Mills – Saegertown pitched a shutout as the Panthers won their third straight game, 23-0, over rival Maplewood Thursday night.

In a Region 2 battle between rivals, potential playoff seeding was on the line, and the Panthers’ defense limited the Tigers to 215 offensive yards.

“Our kids came ready to play tonight,” said Saegertown head coach James Wolfgang. “Things gelled on the field. Defensively, we got a safety, and in our punting game, we pinned them deep. We still need some work on offense, but they got the job done.”

The win puts Saegertown at 4-3. The Panthers are in striking distance of their first winning record since a 5-3 mark in 2020.

Though Maplewood only entered the red zone once, on their initial drive, that possession set the tone for the evening.

The Tigers drove from their 32-yard line to the Panthers 11, where they had 1st-and-10. On the ensuing snap, a bad exchange between quarterback Kyle Jordan and tailback Andrew Proper resulted in a 2-yard loss and a lost fumble.

Saegertown took advantage and marched 87 yards in six plays, where Aaron Shartle scored on a 10-yard run to open the scoring with 1:34 to play in the opening quarter.

The Panthers would extend their lead in the second stanza thanks to three consecutive poor snaps from center that forced Andew Proper to pull the ball down on a fourth-down punt, where he was tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Starting their next possessions from the Tigers’ 39-yard line following the free kick, Cru Scott showed some nifty running as he juked and spun his way to a 24-yard touchdown.

“It feels great, three wins in a row,” Scott said. “I think our team is getting stronger mentally and physically as the season progresses. I think we’re physically and mentally tougher. On that touchdown, the offensive line blocked amazingly. I just waited for my guys and ran the ball into the open space.”

Quarterback William Shaffer ran in the two points as the Panthers pounced to a 16-0 lead with 7:20 to play in the first half.

Maplewood’s remaining two chances to crack the scoreboard ended on downs at the Saegertown 28-yard line.

The first came when they took over at 3:29 to play in the half. At 1:44 to play, after starting at their 39-yard line, they turned the ball over on Jordan’s incomplete 4th-down pass.

On their opening possession of the second half, they went on a 9-play 52-yard drive that saw Proper stopped a yard short on a pass from Jordan.

Andrew Proper led Maplewood with 21 carries for 66 yards but was limited to only six attempts for nine yards in the second half. Jordan added 39 yards on the ground while completing 8-of-17 passes for 93 yards with a pair of interceptions.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Saegertown put the game on ice when Shaffer intercepted a Jordan pass, then tossed a 32-yard touchdown to Scott with 6:36 to play putting the game on ice.

The touchdown pass was the only attempt by the Panthers in the second half. William Shaffer completed 3-of-9 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.

“This feels amazing and is a great win to have,” Shaffer said. “That touchdown was big. I just saw a wide-open receiver down the middle of the field and let Cru do the rest—the turnovers and big-time stops, with credit to our defensive line, also helped. We just played amazing tonight.”

While Scott added 60 total offensive yards with 28 on the ground to complement his 32-yard receiving touchdown.

For Saegertown, the Panthers will face a tall task next Friday night when they host Greenville.

“The streak we’re on helps to build confidence for our young kids,” Wolfgang concluded. “We had our senior back in Aaron Shartle really step up and be a leader. Our lines are huge, and we are playing confidently right now. We’ll try and keep things going.”

The road won’t get any easier for Maplewood as they close the season against Cambridge Springs, Greenville, and Seneca. Schools that have a combined record of 14-4.
