The Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes defeated the Minersville Battlin Miners 35-28 Friday night. This game was the Game of the Week in Schuylkill County, and it showed. Both sides of Rotary Field were packed with fans as these teams faced off. Niko Carestia had four Hurricane touchdowns. Dante Carr and Luke Stevenosky each had two scores for the Miners.

Aidan Clauser opened the game with a huge sack, proving that the Hurricanes wouldn’t back down from a challenge. Minersville was able to recover, Carr finding Stevenosky for a 21-yard touchdown. The Miners stayed scoring with Carr keeping it himself from 2 yards out on their next possession. Carestia gave the Hurricanes a spark after he broke out for a 42-yard touchdown at the end of the quarter. Miners led, 14-7.

The second quarter was dominated by the Hurricanes. Aiden Myers recovered a fumble in Miners’ territory, which was able to set up quarterback Augustus Warke for a scoring opportunity. He found freshman Colton Reber in the endzone, who made a tough catch for the score. Chase Williams and Adam Malinoski led the way on defense, shutting down Miners’ scoring. Carestia finished the half with a 5-yard touchdown and all the liveliness had shifted to the Hurricanes as they now led, 21-14.

Minersville came out of the locker room with a new-found energy and took control of the third quarter. Owen Fortna recovered the football to get the Miners going. Carr worked his team downfield and pitched it off to Stevenosky for the score. Carr then took matters into his own hands a few minutes later, running down the left sideline for a 41-yard touchdown. The Minersville defense showed some will power as well, racking up a few tackles for loss and a sack. Minersville was back on top, 28-21.

The fourth quarter would show which team had the guts to pull out this victory, and that would prove to be the Hurricanes. A huge pass interference call would set up Carestia to score, tying the game. With just minutes remaining, Carestia broke out for a game-defining 74-yard touchdown run. Leyden Hertz sealed the victory with an interception on a long toss towards the endzone for a last-ditch effort from the Miners. Schuylkill Haven defeated the Minersville Battlin’ Miners, 35-28.

Coach Farr and his 8-1 Hurricanes will face Blue Mountain in the annual Backyard Brawl to close out the regular season. Coach Frantz and his Miners finish their regular season against Nativity.
