Niko Carestia looks the part, rushing for 287 yards and 7 tds
The Hurricanes 600th program win didn’t come easy last night. It was an offensive battle between two of the top ranked teams in the state, but eventually Schuylkill Haven defeated the Minersville Battlin’ Miners Thursday night with a final score of 72-52. Niko Carestia scored seven touchdowns on the night, accounting for 287 of the Hurricanes’ 533 rushing yards. The Hurricanes had zero yards passing. Dante Carr reached the endzone four times for the Miners.
Minersville started hot with back-to-back scores, Dante Carr running the ball in from 1 yard out and then hitting receiver Logan Hutsko for a touchdown on the next possession. The Hurricanes answered, Niko Carestia taking it in from 23 yards out and completing the two-point conversion. The Hurricanes then recovered a Miners’ fumble, leading to Niko Castillo finding the endzone. Minersville followed up with Hutsko breaking free for a run to the 1-yard line, Carr finishing off the drive. Easton Schultz completed the two-point conversion.

The Miners were successful in an onside kick attempt, leading to Paiten LaPoint scoring. The Hurricanes kept it close with a 52-yard touchdown from Carestia. Aaron Gilbert added defensive pressure with a sack, but the Miners closed out the quarter with a 71-yard catch and run from Carr to LaPoint, making the score 28-20.

Carestia and Carr exchanged touchdowns in the second quarter of play. Carestia opened up with a touchdown from 27 yards out. Carr responded with a 17-yard score off of a quarterback scramble. Carestia then had a pair of touchdowns mid-way through the quarter, a 7-yard touchdown and another from 10 yards out, set up by Castillo, who had an interception. Carestia was successful defensively as well with a sack. Carr was able to break free for a 60-yard run to set up his kicker, Jordan Bowers for a 42-yard field goal. Minersville led 45-42 heading into the locker rooms.

The Hurricanes capitalized after the Miners turned the ball over on downs, Carestia scoring once again, this time from 42 yards out. Carr had his final score of the night, a 10-yard touchdown when the Miners gained back possession. Carr left the game due to injury and was replaced by Derek Derenzo. Carestia scored his final touchdown of the night to close out the third quarter and give the Hurricanes the lead, 50-52.
The Hurricanes finished business with a 91-yard run down the Miners’ sideline for Castillo for a touchdown and Colton Reber reaching the endzone to close out the game. The Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes defeated the Minersville Battlin’ Miners. 72-52.

Coach Mike Farr and his Hurricanes will face Williams Valley at Rotary Field. Coach Justin Frantz and his Battlin’ Miners will take on Marian Catholic.
