Season starts with scrimmages across the state!

I was able to make it out to two scrimmages yesterday. I was able to watch four of the twelve Heritage Conference teams in action!

10am River Valley Panthers at Penns Manor Comets

A very good defensive struggle. The games biggest offensive play came when the Comets got a huge inside push and Panther quarterback Max Perschetti had his pass batted back at him. Perschetti a multi sport athlete made a great play catching his own pass and running about fifty yards before beginning tackled. The great thing about scrimmages are they don’t keep track of the score. As I talked to fans on both sidelines, I learned both teams were winning.

6pm Marion Center Stingers at Conemaugh Valley BlueJays

I was able to catch two games because this one was moved to the evening. I don’t think anyone was wondering who was the better team in this one. The Stingers used a swarming defense and a well balanced offense to control play on both sides of the ball.

Thoughts

There is a big shortage of referees with many teams scrambling and some teams already moving their games to Saturday night. Three of the officials at the Penns Manor game were 70,73 & 80. They did a great job. I was at a volleyball game earlier and an 18 year old young man was officiating. It is a good way to make some money and watch your favorite sport for free. Take a test!

Speaking of Saturday Night football games, I’m all for it. District Six used to play half the playoff games on Saturdays until a few years ago. However with all the money being made from boardcasting rights they don’t seem to care if anyone actually attends the games.
I think the Heritage Conference should team up with our local radio station and air one of the six county teams once per year on Saturdays. It is win-win. You would have better crowds (more $ for the schools) and the advertisers would be happy with the lack of competition (more $ for the radio stations). I know youth football plays on Saturdays but if you only did it a couple of times, you could move a few games.

Finally roster sizes
We need to get these young men out for football. Conemaugh Valley and Penns Manor had about 24 players each. Marion Center has about 30. They are an injury or two away from being in trouble. Praying for all the young men who are playing this season!
