Second half surge propels Pen Argyl and subdues unbeaten Palisades

Late 2nd quarter field goal gives the Green Knights momentum to pull away from the Pirates

PEN ARGYL- Sometimes momentum of a football game can change on just one single play that can effect the rest of the contest, that is what happened Saturday afternoon “Up on the Hill at Alumni Stadium as the Palisades Pirates scored a touchdown, in the last minute and a half before intermission, after the Pirates held the Green Knights on downs. With just 15 seconds left they decided to run a play and fumbled the ball and the Knights pounced on the loose ball and would convert it into points to cut the lead to 14-10.

The second half the Knights were able to put some distance between them and their opponents in a key Colonial League game giving the Knights a 38-21 win over a Palisades team that came into Saturday with a perfect 4-0 record before a modest crowd at Alumni Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter, Pen Argyl got on the board early in the second as quarterback Mason Soos dropped a dime in the arms of Christopher Crespo from 28 yards out in the back right corner of the end zone for a 7-0 lead at the 10:22 mark. The touchdown was set up by a 30 completion to Zach Metzgar.

Palisades answered right back on a six-play drive that culminated when quarterback Jack Trickel connected with Lincoln Cook for a six yard score the drive covered 57 yards. The next time the Pirates got the ball the would complete another long drive as Mason Schultz was on the receiving end of a 44 yard scoring pass from Trickel and a 14-7 lead with 1:29 left till halftime.

Pen Argyl’s ensuing drive stalled and the Pirates took over, but then fumbled, on a bad snap,the ball back to the Knights where Jamie Acatino recovered the ball. Soos then hit Metzgar on a crossing pattern for a gain of 19 to set the ball up at the Pirate 13. Reid Kotulka came in and connected on a 30 yard field goal making the score 14-10 as the teams headed for the locker room.

On their opening drive of the second half the Green Knights, 2 pass interference calls against Palisadaes set the Knights up for a six yard Caiden Faust touchdown from six yards out and a 17-14 lead at the 7:01 mark of the third quarter.

Palasades retook the lead on a 22 yard run by Trickel around the left side at the 4:12 mark of the quarter, The Pirates only rushed for 67 yards in the contest on 13 carries while Pen Argyl gained 192 yards on 45 attempts. Trickel threw the ball 33 times completing 19 for 189 yards and two scores but also had 2 interceptions.

It didn’t take the home team to score again as Soos Connected with Faust on a short slant route and with no safeties in the middle of the field he deposited the ball in the end zone from 76 yards out at the 3:19 mark.

Faust would add two more scores in the final twelve minutes first with a 9 yard run, the with reading Trickels’s eyes stepped in front of an out pattern and returned it 34 yards to close out the scoring.

Faust ended the game with 73 rushing yards on 23 carries, Soos completed fifty percent of his passes for 245 yards and two scores. Metzgar led the Knights receivers with 111 yard on six receptions.

“That turnover right before half was crucial we’d score after that otherwise that turnover could have meant nothing.” coach Brady Mutton stated afterwards.

Pen Argyl inproved to 4-1 and will face (2-3) Salisbury Twp on the road next week. The Falcons dropped a 42-6 decision to Tamaqua on Friday and Palisades who are also 4-1 will try to get back into the win column will be at Blue Mountain(2-3). The Eagles coming off a 35-0 shutout of Bangor.
