Behind Logan Steele and Colin Steinhart, Shamokin improves to 3-0 with unbeaten Jersey Shore looming next week.

SUNBURY- The Shamokin Indians wasted little time putting up points Friday night on the road at Shikellamy Stadium with two quick scores in just under three minutes gone by in the contest en route to convincing 52-21 win before a packed house to stay unbeaten in the Heatrand Athletic Conference.

Shikellamy received the opening kickoff but an errand pass would be picked off by Logan Steele at the Brave 49 and weaving his way into the end zone for the opening score making it 7-0 with just 1:51 taken off the clock. Colin Steinhart added the PAT.

The next time the Braves got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff, Ryan Bickert would step in front of a Brody Rebuck pass and returned for what looked like another touchdown, but a penalty for a block in the back negated the score. Not to worry though as it just took the Indians three plays from the Braves 22 yard line for Steele to cash in another score from 10 yards out making a it 14-0 with 9:17 left in the opening quarter as Steinhart connected on the point-after.

Shamokin’s defense stepped up almost all game as the Braves found it difficult to advance the ball from what seemed they were backed up in their own end of the field much in the first half. But an interception by Shikellamy’s Luke Kealy would set the Braves in positive field position a 25 yard pass from Rebuck to a wide open Corbin Stahl on a fourth down play cut the lead in half at 14-7 with 3:09 left in the quarter.

The Indians would then go on a 26 point run that seemingly would put the ballgame away for all intent and purposes. Steele would cap off another impressive drive by calling his own number on a quarterback sneak from a yard out. A third interception of a Rebuck pass by Steinhart at his own 25 and dodging any would-be tacklers found himself in the end zone with a 75 yard return to make it 27-7 with 8:47 left in the second quarter.

After a fourth pick by the swarming Indian defense that set the visitors up at the Brave 27. The drive cuminated in a two yard run by Zakem Clinton. That touchdown was set up by a nifty 15 yard run by Clinton give Shamokin a 34-7 lead with just twenty-five seconds before intermission.

Shamokin racked up 275 yards on the ground for the contest with Clinton gaining near 90 yards. Other contributors to that total were Trey Taylor with 54 yards, Jace Gink and Steele combined for another 75 yards. The Indian defense only allowed the Braves to rush for 56 yards on 30 attempts. They contained Tristan Smith to just 28 yards on 7 carries.

“We scored 52 points tonight but we had 125 yards in penalties tonight and we felt we left another 21-28 points on the field tonight, we can’t do that next week against Jersey Shore and expect to win.: Shamokin coach Marc Persing stated after the game.

Steele, who struggled at times in the passing game in the first half by only completing two passes for less than 30 yards acme up with a huge completion to Steinhart that covered 56 yards when his team was backed up in the shadow of their own end zone. That led to a 12 yard touchdown pass between the duo to make it a 40-7 game. Steele would end up throwing for 96 yards on 4-of-11 passing and the one score.

Shikallemy had some bright spots in the second half as Brady Kurtz, the backup quarterback connected for two scores, the first on a 20 yard pass to Kyler Campbell, a freshman and then a second on a 60 yard bomb to Victor De La Rosa. Kurtz would throw for 85 yards and the two scores on the night.

Shamokin, also got two touchdowns with their backup signal-caller Barrett Walsh, who picked up a 17 yard scoring connection with Cooper Rossnock and then a 16 yard run by Mason Purcell to close out the scoring.

Shamokin (3-0) will be back at home next week with a huge contest with 3-0 Jersey Sore. The Bulldogs ran roughshod over Selinsgrove Friday night 49-6. Tom Gravish’s squad has wins over two District two’s powerhouses Dallas 27-7 and the last week a 49-42 win over Del Val. Shikalleny now 2-1 will be at home next week to face Williamsport, who is also 3-0 coming off a 42-0 win over Central Mountain
