SHIPPENSBURG, PA – Slippery Rock improved to 3-0 Saturday afternoon following their 33-7 win over Shippensburg.
The Rock entered Saturday’s contest following tough wins over New Haven (22-7) and Shepherd (20-10). Both teams had made the playoffs last season, and received votes in the Top 25 poll prior to their games. Shippensburg would look to continue their own winning streak, after they defeated Clarion 24-21 last week. The Rock and Red Raiders had not met since September 14, 2019, where the Rock was victorious 54-19.
Shippensburg would strike on the opening drive, capped off by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Sam Stoner to Tobee Stokes. However, that would be the Raiders only score of the game. Following a punt from Slippery Rock that pinned Shippensburg deep in their own territory, transfer student Todd Hill would get pressure in the backfield resulting in a safety. Following those 2 points, Slippery Rock would go on to score another 31 straight.
Quarterback Brayden Long went 24-for-41 with 268-yards and a touchdown. Idris Lawrence and Chris D’Or combined for 135-yards on the ground. Tony Grimes led the team with 7 receptions for 76 yards. On defense, Todd Hill was a game-wrecker, recording 6 tackles, 4.5 for loss, 2.0 sacks, and a safety. Munchie Johnson led the team with 8 tackles, 6 solo, 3 for loss, and a sack. Through the air, Donnell Henriquez and Pooh Lawton both recorded interceptions. Slippery Rock out gained Shippensburg in total yards, 408 to 135.
Slippery Rock will return home next Saturday, when they start PSAC West play against Edinboro. Edinboro is 1-3 on the season, with their lone win coming on the road against DI Robert Morris. Aside from that, the Fighting Scots have lost to East Stroudsburg (12-24), Kutztown (0-26), and most recently Bloomsburg (27-32). Slippery Rock has defeated Edinboro in the previous 5 matchups, including a 56-18 win last season. Edinboros will look for their first win over the Rock since October 21, 2017, where they won 49-39.
