SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – Slippery Rock reigned victorious over the Seton Hill Griffins Saturday afternoon, 38-20.
Despite Seton Hill receiving the football to start the game, it would be Slippery Rock getting out to an early lead. Just under five minutes into the game, a 7 play, 73-yard drive would be capped off by a Chris D’Or 1-yard rushing touchdown. Following another 3-and-out from the Griffins, Slippery Rock’s offense would look to replicate their first drive. However, on 4th and 6 from the Seton Hill 38-yard line, Brayden Long’s pass was intercepted by Ritch McCormack. 8 plays and 34-yards later, Seton Hill would elect to attempt the 39-yard field goal, which would sail wide right no good.
An unsuccessful fake punt attempt from Mason Yohn set the Griffins up with another golden opportunity. Ben Zavatchan, looking to make up for the missed field goal on the previous drive, would have his 29-yard attempt blocked by Kanye Thompson.
Both teams exchanged possessions, until Seton Hill’s offense finally found the big play they desperately needed. On the first play of the drive, Jake Cruz found Todd Phillips deep down the sideline, outrunning the defenders 73-yards to the house. On the final drive of the half, with Slippery Rock looking to take the lead heading into the locker room, Mason Yohn drilled the 41-yard field goal as time expired. This being Slippery Rock’s first 40+ yard field goal since 2021.
It wouldn’t take Slippery Rock long to take control of the second half. On the opening half kickoff, Kylon Wilson took the ball 97-yards to the end zone, silencing the Seton Hill sideline. Following another 3-and-out from Seton Hill, Slippery Rock would look to run away with the game with a 1st and goal. However, an interception for Dement Whitehead on third down kept the Griffins in the game.
With 5:06 remaining in the third quarter, Jake Cruze again found Todd Phillips 15-yards for the score, making it a 3-point game. Unfortunately for Seton Hill, Slippery Rock wouldn’t be shaken, with Brayden Long finding Logan Ramper for a 37-yard touchdown on fourth down. Another 3-and-out for Seton Hill set up Slippery Rock’s offense to add to their lelad. On 2nd and 8, Long connected with Mike Solomon for the 22-yard receiving touchdown.
As if things couldn’t get worse for Seton Hill, a Ky’Ro Craggette fumble recovered by Josh Stokes to the 5-yard line drained any hope left from Seton Hill. 3 plays later, Brayden Long took the quarterback keeper into the end zone for the 1-yard touchdown. However, Craggette’s would response from the mistake, ending the following drive with a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Both teams would exchange possessions before the clock ran out, with Slippery Rock ontop 38-20.
Slippery Rock will look ahead to Bloomsburg next week at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, for the final regular season game of the 2024 campaign.
