In a matchup between 2 Allegheny Conference foes, it was South Allegheny cruising to a 35-o win over Apollo Ridge thanks to their offense and defense.
Apollo Ridge got the ball to start the game and had good field position at the South Allegheny 49 yard line. Apollo Ridge’s run game was looking good on the first drive and marched right down the field once inside the 10 yard line, South Allegheny’s defense stood tall and eventually got a stop on fourth down. “They came out and punched us in the mouth, they got some really big boys over there, and I’ll be honest, I really wasn’t expecting that to happen, but you know what we had a goal line stand multiple ones in the playoff loss last year at Ellwood City so I kind of felt for those guys, they were kind of built for it, so it was huge, it was gigantic to keep them out of end zone” said Coach Hanson.
South Allegheny started with the ball at their own 2 yard line but that didn’t slow them down at all. It was a big run play that got them into Apollo Ridge territory. A couple plays later after doing that Alijah Cook found Kymair Brown for a 30 yard touchdown pass making the score 7-0 South Allegheny with 1:55 in the first quarter. “Just a response, because I think it was closer to a 90 some yard drive, they had the ball inside the five I believe, and I mean, you know, good players, good coaches, they executed, it’s what the kids are capable of” said Coach Hanson.
Midway through the second quarter, South Allegheny started a drive at their own 26 yard line. It took one play to get into Apollo Ridge territory and on the second play Joey Gamret scored on a 34 yard touchdown run. That made the score 14-0 South Allegheny with 5:28 in the second quarter.

After the touchdown Apollo Ridge had a good drive going and were inside the South Allegheny 15 yard line and once again South Allegheny’s defense stood strong and forced a field goal attempt which was no good and the score remained 14-o South Allegheny.
South Allegheny got the ball once again and started on their own 20 yard line. On the first play Hakim Harrell was off to the races and scored on an 80 yard touchdown run. That made the score 20-0 South Allegheny with 20 seconds left in the first half. Harrell was a key player in the win he had 135 yards on 3 carries. “You always wanna end the first half on a big note, and you wanna start the second half on a positive note, so you know getting those two, they say football is often more than that, that last 4 minute drive of the first drive and that opening 4 minute drive to start in the second half, so we responded well” said Coach Hanson.
South Allegheny got the ball to start the second half and it didn’t take them long to extend their lead. On the fifth play of the drive Alijah Cook found his brother Drew Cook for a 12 yard touchdown pass and after the two point conversion it was 28-0 South Allegheny. The Cook Brothers both played a key role in the win. Alijah Cook was 9 of 15 passing for 138 yard and Drew Cook had 5 catches for 72 yards.
