Johnstown – The Ken Lantzy Classic has seen some good football games over the years; 2026 can be added to the list.
It was back and forth, and the contest wasn’t decided until the closing minutes.
Trailing 20-14 with just a few ticks under four minutes to play, starting at their 39-yard line. The North drove the football to the 11-yard line in enemy territory, where they had a first down, only to see that quickly turn into fourth down and 23 with 1:39 to play at the South’s 23-yard line, thanks to a bad snap and a couple of sacks.
North quarterback Lance Jones of Meyersdale escaped the pocket and tossed a short completion to Jake Kissell of Bishop Guilfoyle, who ran down the sideline, only to be pushed out of bounds at the 4-yard line, effectively ending the contest just a few short yards away from what would’ve been a dramatic finish.
The South was able to score what would go on to be the game-winning touchdown when Logan Lichtenfels of United Valley caught a 50-yard touchdown pass on a beautiful rainbow from Marion Center’s Camden Rising down the near sideline with 4:01 to play.
Rising completed 6-of-13 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, with all seven completions coming in the second half. Lichtenfels caught balls for 57 yards.
Though the South passed for 213 yards in the game, the night belonged to Everett’s Jakobe Harman, who rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown, earning MVP honors.
“It’s just special to be able to end my high school football career with a win,” Harman said. “There are some ballers out there. Every day I try to push myself and perform at the best of my ability, and it all worked out tonight. It’s awesome to get the MVP. I didn’t think I was going to
Harman, who will play his college football at Shippensburg, rushed for 2056 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior with the Warriors. He tallied 71 yards in the first half, while adding another 88 yards in the second half of his final high school football game.
He capped a 9-play 78-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown burst, giving his team a 14-7 lead at the 5:56 mark of the third quarter.
However, the North responded quickly as Easton Slanoc of Portage returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to the 18-yard line, where three plays later Lance Jones scored on a 6-yard run, tying the game at 14 just 1:07 after Harman’s go-ahead touchdown.
Lance Jones rushed for 14 yards and completed 7-of-12 passes for 104 yards to lead the North.
The teams played to a scoreless first quarter, but it was the South that broke the ice in the second stanza as they went on a 12-play 95-yard drive capped by Somerset’s Colt Hagans, who threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Forest Hills’ Xander Richardson on the quarter’s opening snap.
Hagans completed 10 of 16 passes for 105 yards, while Richardson caught a game-high five passes for 80 yards and a score.
The North pulled even at halftime when Tussey Mountain’s Noah Lucko scored on a 12-yard run with 1:04 remaining in the first half following a 41-yard drive.
Lucko rushed for a team-high 48 yards on eight carries, including 32 in the first half.
