Johnstown – The South Squad used 25 second-half points to pull away from the North Squad 39-14 Friday night at Trojan Stadium in Johnstown.
On a hot and humid evening, the South piled up nearly 400 yards of total offense and cruised past the North.
One catalyst of the victory was Bedford’s Quincy Swaim, who earned a scholarship check for being the offensive back player of the game.
“I wasn’t sure if Ty Dumm from Northern Cambria would win it or me, but you know, either way, we all played great today, had so much fun, and everybody came out injury-free, which is great, “said Swaim.
Ty Dumm caught four passes for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Swaim’s two touchdowns, 144 yards of total offense, and a 245-yard, 3-touchdown performance by Bishop Guilfoyle’s Chase Kissell led the way.
“It means so much, this game and everything,” Swaim said. All these players, you know, come from so many different schools around the area, and we form bonds. Unbreakable bonds. Now, I’ll be talking to these guys 20 years from now. And you know, winning means a lot because that’s the most fun part about this game: winning.”
Swaim opened the scoring for the South Squad on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, capping an 8-play 52-yard drive.
Padding their lead on their second possession, Central Cambria’s Grady Snyder ran in a 2-yard score following a 57-yard drive.
Trailing 14-0 after a quarter, the North got into the end zone thanks to a pair of Northern Bedford County Panthers when Aaron Bowers caught a 24-yard touchdown from Vaughn Schleinkofer with 2:31 to play in the first half.
In the second half, the South seized control, led by Kissell, whose three touchdown passes put the nail in the coffin.
The first came following a short punt as he tossed a 23-yard scoring pass to Hollidaysburg’s Brady Steiner.
Less than two minutes later, he launched a rainbow down the far sideline, where Northern Cambria’s Ty Dumm hauled in a 66-yard bomb. Kissell then caught the 2-point conversion on their version of the Philly Special, giving the South a 29-7 lead after three quarters.
The North scored its second touchdown when Penn Cambria’s Gavin Harrold scored on a 3-yard run.
Swaim scored his second touchdown of the night when Kissell dropped a dime in the breadbasket from 18 yards out.
“I mean a lot of my touchdowns, I have to give credit to the offensive line because they work their butts off, Swaim said. ” I mean, all of them are dogs, and they work so hard. They worked hard at practice all week.”
Kissell, a Shippensburg recruit who won a state title with Bishop Guilfoyle six months ago, shook off two first-half interceptions to complete 13 of 31 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
Fellow Maurader, placekicker Michael Cacciotti, booted a 33-yard field goal to close the scoring.
