Herman – South Side rushed for 341 yards and cruised to a 42-6 victory over home-standing Summit Academy Saturday afternoon.

Despite the absence of leading rusher Andrew Corfield, the Rams scored on all six possessions with an even three in each half, leading to an eventual 42-0 lead.

“We talked to the guys this week about things we needed to improve on,” said South Side head coach Luke Travelpiece.

“We saw some things, and we’ve also seen them on tape, which helps us evaluate ourselves. We identified areas for improvement, so we challenged them this week to address these issues. Our guys responded to that. We faced some adversity with injuries and other challenges. We have to be disciplined. We need to improve on what we’ve shown. We’re pleased with the kids’ responses.”

The Rams sent a pair of rushers, Amare Moman and Will Morgan, over the century mark, as Morgan rushed for a game-high 118 yards on 17 carries, while Moman added 11 rushes for 104 yards.

“They complemented each other well, “said Travelpiece. “They ran hard, protected the football, and blocked for each other. We’re happy with that. We’ve been beaten up this year so far. So we’ve been looking for the right combination. But these guys came together today and filled the roles well.”

It was Moman’s 4-yard run at the 2:56 mark of the first quarter that opened the scoring following a 13-play 86-yard drive.

Curtis Roy then intercepted Knights’ quarterback Syamir Newkirk at the Summit Academy 43-yard line, leading to Todd Matijevich’s 1-yard scoring early in the second quarter.

Before halftime, Roy capped a 13-play 84-yard drive with an 8-yard run with 24 seconds left on the first half clock.

Will Hudson added a 1-yard run to begin the third quarter following a 57-yard drive that gave South Side a 28-0 lead after three quarters.

Another long 14-play, time-consuming drive put the mercy clock in effect when Moman scored his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 3-yard run, 49 seconds into the final stanza.

Curtis Roy then came up with his second interception of the game, leading to Paxton Short’s 14-yard touchdown run, extending the lead at 42-0 with 4:38 to play.

Summit Academy scored in the closing minutes when Syamir Newkirk ran 94 yards for a touchdown. Despite the long run, due to sacks, he finished the afternoon with 68 yards on five carries, while completing 6-of-12 passes for 41 yards.

Before the long run, the Knights were held to 21 yards of offense.

“Very proud of our secondary. That quarterback and set of receivers can score at any given time, which challenged our secondary,” concluded Travelpiece. “We were a little bit worried about that coming into the game. But the kids just came in with an unselfish mindset, and that’s what it’s going to take. That’s what the good teams do, so we’re happy with their attitude and their results.”
