The South rode the arm of Braylon Wagner, the hands of Jaxon Huffman, and the legs of Hunter Scherer to come away with the 48-22 victory at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway on Friday evening.

The North actually led in the contest 14-6 after the first quarter of play. But then the South kicked it up a notch and cruised, scoring 34 consecutive points to lead 40-14 with 8 minutes left in the game.
Wagner, who played for Redbank Valley, was the South’s Offensive MVP as all he did was throw for 394 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also ran 38 yards for another score. His teammate at Redbank, Huffman, grabbed 11 passes for 246 yards and 2 touchdowns. Scherer, who played football for Karns City, carried the ball 12 times for 110 yards, crossing the goal line a trio of times.

The game was very chippy, especially in the first half when the South committed numerous penalties which hurt their cause. After scoring the opening touchdown, the South witnessed the North battle back to take the lead at the end of one stanza when Maddox Hetrick of Punxsy reeled off a 68 yard run, followed by Trey Wingard’s (DuBois) 79-yard strike to Logan Moore of Punxsy.
The South settled down a bit from the rough stuff and scored on two Scherer 2-yard runs, the second coming with 1:26 left in the half to take the lead for good at 20-14.
The only other score the North could muster was a 69-yard pass from Zaden Gould (Punxsy) to Frankie Smith of St. Marys in the 4th quarter. Smith was the North’s Offensive MVP.

The weather was conducive for football on this night and these District Nine seniors on both sides of the field did not disappoint the large crowd that was on hand at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway. The South now leads the series six games to five. The South has now won four straight and five of the last six games.
The North’s defensive player of the game was Malakai Zucal who intercepted Wagner not once, but twice. The South’s defensive player of the game was Hayden Hindman who had an interception and had some hard tackles.
There were $24,000 in scholarships given out to the players, many of whom were playing in their last football game.
