The South Western Mustangs toppled York Suburban 36-6 in the second game of the York Rose Bowl Kickoff Classic on Friday. They did it by controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and with the help of RB Austin Rollman on offense and Logan Klinedinst on defense.
Unofficially, Rollman gained 86 yards on 15 carries and scored two first half touchdowns on runs of three and six yards. Klinedinst had the play of the game and that play was, perhaps, the turning point of the game too when he intercepted a Suburban pass and scampered 48 yards to put his team up 12-6 late in the opening stanza.
“We made some adjustments with his alignment after their first drive when Logan got beat. He self-adjusted himself and he wasn’t going to let that happen again. Next time they tried it, he was there waiting for it,” said South Western’s coach, Tony Shermeyer.
Actually, the Trojans of York Suburban took the early lead when they drove 67 yards in 13 plays. The key to the drive was a roughing the punter penalty on South Western that allowed Suburban to get a first down and retain possession of the ball. Eventually quarterback Rylan Bratton plunged in from the one on third down to give the home team a short-lived lead, 6-0.
Brooklyn Calcutt received the subsequent kickoff at the fifteen and returned it 58 yards to the York 27-yard line. From there the Mustangs went 27 yards in 6 plays to tie the game at six when Kyle Stup scored on a 3-yard run on 4th down.
On their second drive, York Suburban got to midfield when Klinedinst had his pick six. In York’s first two possessions, they gained 91 yards. The rest of the night the Trojans gained a total of 60 yards as the South Western ‘D’ just played phenomenal shutting down the run and allowing only one pass completion after allowing four in the first two possessions.
Rollman scored the next two South Western touchdowns to put his Mustangs up 26-6 by halftime. “Austin is a tough runner. He runs the ball hard. He doesn’t need a big hole and he doesn’t come down easy,” said Shermeyer.

The only scoring in the second half was by South Western on a 35-yard field goal by Gavin Fraim and a rare offensive lineman touchdown when Mason Currey pounced on a fumble in the end zone.
South Western gained 282 yards of offense led by Rollman and QB Bryce Graham’s 106 yards passing by completing 7 of 8 passes. “With the exception of early on, I thought our guys played really well,” stated Shermeyer. Next up for South Western is a home game with Dover, while York Suburban visits Bermudian Springs.
