Southern Columbia Demolishes Farrell for 15th State Title

Jim Roth’s team was 7-5 last year. With many of the same athletes and hard offseason work, the Tigers’ hunger was reignited in 2025 following an opening-week loss to Wyomissing. Since then, the Tigers put together 15 straight victories on their way to a PIAA 2A title victory. Grady Garcia’s 27-yard touchdown run, escaping down the far sideline and then cutting into the end zone, provided the quick start. The Tigers held Farrell to just nine plays in the first half, dominating time of possession and capitalizing on every opportunity on their way to a 43-22 victory.

The latest Garcia to make his mark on the Southern Columbia program made a house call on the fifth play of the game, streaking down the far sideline, zipping through traffic for the score. With 9:56 to go in the first, the Tigers took the early 6-0 lead.

Farrell answered immediately. Jadon King-Vincent took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the end zone. Just like that, Farrell was in the lead 8-6.

Southern Columbia rebounded quickly, as their next drive ate up five minutes of game clock over the next ten plays. Farrell had a chance to get a big stop at their own 31. But on 4th & 3, Ayden Hockenbroch accelerated over the left side, stretching the defense, and picked up six yards and the key first down. On the next play, Garcia zipped through a hole over the right side and motored to the end zone with defenders lagging ten yards behind.

Farrell’s first offensive drive of the game was cut short when Aaron Pegues took a low snap. That threw off the timing of the play, and as he dropped back, two Tiger defenders were already on him. The ball came out, and Chase Williams pounced on it for the recovery. The three-headed monster of Garcia, Brayden Andrews, and Joey Williams allowed the Tigers to chip away at the next nine minutes. After a holding penalty, Second and Goal came from the 15-yard line, and 3rd down came from the 19. Hockenbroch took off up the middle to the 3, setting up a 4th and Goal play. Brayden Andrews powered across the goal line for the touchdown, extending the Tiger lead to 22-8 with 4:31 to go in the half.

Farrell lost four yards on their next drive and were forced to punt the ball back with 2:23 to go in the half. Southern took over on the Steelers’ 43. Excellent clock management by coach Roth and his staff allowed Southern to advance steadily down the field, still using the ground-and-pound strategy. Hockenbroch picked his way for a 12-yard gain, followed by Andrews for four more, putting the ball on the 1-yard line with time dwindling. Garcia took it from there for his third score of the half. The Tigers took the 28-8 lead into the locker room after controlling the ball for nearly 19 minutes.

Defense took over early in the third quarter. Following a 22-yard completion from Pegues to Jamauri Jones, the Steelers faced 4th & 16 on the Southern 46. Pegues dropped back to pass and stepped up in the pocket–right into the arms of Ethan Makowski, who threw him down for the turnover on downs.

In a rare stop for the Steelers, they held the Tigers on 4th & 1 at the Farrell 30. Taking over from there, Pegues went to his top target in Dorean Cain for a 32-yard pickup into Tiger territory. A much-needed seven-yard completion to Juju Jones on fourth down allowed the drive to continue in the red zone. Pegues hit Jones again for the 13-yard touchdown strike, moving the Steelers back within 28-14.

After a Tigers three-and-out, Farrell faced a third-and-long call. Pegues, under heavy pressure near the sideline, chucked the ball out of bounds and was promptly flagged for intentional grounding. Punting from deep within their own territory. Southern took over one more time in Steelers territory. Facing another fourth down, Hockenbroch hit Blaise Kissinger over the middle in heavy traffic at the 5. From there, Brayden Andrews scored to move the lead back to 36-14 with 8:56 to play.

As the dust settled, Southern Columbia outgained Farrell 352 to -28 on the ground. Grady Garcia ran 12 times for 106 yards and three touchdowns. Brayden Andrews added 88 yards and two scores on 22 carries. Joey Williams rounded out the ground attack with 91 yards and a score, while Hockenbroch added 66 more in key situations.
