Center Valley-

Southern Lehigh jumps out to a fast start and never looks back. Steckert runs for 4 scores and Sams throws for 3 as the Spartan offense overwhelms Blue Mountain en route to a 55-14 victory.

Thursday night football in Center Valley started off with the visiting Eagles winning the coin toss and deferring their choice to the 2nd half.  It did not take Southern Lehigh long to have the Eagles second guessing their choice as on the first play from scrimmage, the Spartans’ Sean Steckert gashed the Blue Mountain defense for an 89 yard touchdown romp to start off the game.  Only 21 seconds in to the game, it was 7-0 Southern Lehigh.

The Blue Mountain offense took the field looking to respond, but the Southern Lehigh defense forced a quick 3 and out to get the ball back to their offense who were looking to extend the Southern Lehigh lead.  The Spartan offense once again found the end-zone, however it was through the air as on the 4th play of the drive quarterback Colton Sams found Luke Kawczenski over the middle for a 24 yard score with 8:47 remaining in the opening quarter.

This score was then followed up by another 3 and out for the Blue Mountain offense and another quick score by the Southern Lehigh offense.  This scoring drive was capped by a 53 yard deep shot from Colton Sams to Otto Young to increase the Spartan lead to 21-0 with just over 6 minutes remaining in the 1st.

The ensuing drives saw the teams exchange defensive stops.  In to the 2nd quarter, Southern Lehigh had been driving, and that drive came to an end on the first play of the 2nd quarter as Steckert cut back across the middle, ran over a Blue Mountain defender and took it to the house from 37 yards out to extend the Spartan lead to 28-0 just seconds in to the 2nd quarter.

Desperately looking to get something going on offense, Blue Mountain was able to put together a lenghty drive, culminating in a 4 yard touchdown run by Carter Smith on 4th down to get the Eagles on the board.  With just over 4minutes remaining in the half, the score was Southern Lehigh 28, Blue Mountain 7.

The Spartan offense looked to respond and they did as on their next drive, Colton Sams found Jacoby Jacobs for a long catch and run all the way down to the Blue Mountain 3 yardline and on the next play, Steckert found a hole up the middle to extend the Southern Lehigh lead back to 28, 35-7 with  just under 2 minutes remaining in the first half.

In to the 2nd half, Blue Mountain looking to close the gap, has a Cohen Kirby pass picked off by Southern Lehigh’s Adam Fritts who returns it to the Blue Mountain 39 yardline.  On first play of the new posession for Southern Lehigh, Sean Steckert once again finds a hole up the middle and takes it 39 yards to the house to extend the Spartan lead to 42-7 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.

The Spartan defense forced another quick 3 and out and Sams and the Southern Lehigh offense made quick work of their next possession as he found Luke Kawczenski over the top of the Eagle defense for the 43 yard score.  The extra point attempt was blocked and the score was now 48-7 in  favor of Southern Lehigh with 6:13 left in the 3rd quarter.

Blue Mountian responded with a lengthy drive of their own and on the first play of the 4th quarter, the Eagles’ Carter Smith scored his 2nd touchdown of the night from 4 yards out to make the score 48-14 in favor of Southern Lehigh with 22:56 remaining in the game.

The final score of the night came via the legs of backup Spartan quarterback Declan Walsh who found a gap in up the middle of the Blue Mountain defense and scored from 20 yards out.  With 7:46 left in the game, the score was Southern Lehigh 55, Blue Mountain 14.

The Spartan defense forced the Eagles to punt on their next drive and the Spartan offense went on to kneel out the rest of the game.  Final score from Center Valley, Southern Lehigh 55, Blue Mountain 14.  After the game I was able to speak with Colton Sams and Sean Steckert about their team’s victory.

With the defeat, Blue Mountain finishes their season with a record of 7-5.  The victory for Southern Lehigh, now 11-1, propels them to the District XI 4A championship game next Thursday against Bethlehem Catholic who are fresh off a Holy War rematch victory over Allentown Central Catholic by a score of 34-31.
