Springdale Snaps 13-game Skid

Herman – Springdale won their first football game since a 28-0 victory over West Greene in the 2021 WPIAL Class A playoffs.

In doing so, the Dynamos gave 2nd-year head coach Ryan Tempalski his victory with a 35-21 win over Summit Academy Saturday afternoon in Herman.

“The kids earned it today,” Tempalski said. “This was virtually the same team returning this season and was their second season through our system and how we’re running things. They earned it and kept fighting back. They were getting pounded and pounded last year. They saw progression toward the end of last season and from our first two games. We were tied with Ligonier at halftime and led Northgate in the fourth quarter. These kids earned this victory. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Springdale started fast, opening up a 20-0 first-quarter lead, then had to hold off a Knights’ rally in the second half.

The Dynamos took the opening kickoff and marched 60 yards in seven plays, capped off by Noah Bradley’s 9-yard run at the 9-minute mark.

On the Knights’ second snap from scrimmage, Garrett Myers stole a pitch for Steyn Sarduy and raced 42 yards for a touchdown.

On the Dynamos’ following possession, quarterback Chase Weihrauch scored on a 15-yard run following a 59-yard drive as Springdale led 20-0 with 2:40 to play in the first quarter.

“It’s almost a bad thing, I hate to say it,” said Tempalski. “You get up and think you’re just going to walk home. But what I liked about it was that it showed that we were ready to play and were prepared. Sometimes, you’re thinking about being on the bus ride home; eating a sub is easy. You never want to start slow; you always want to start fast, but sometimes it can be hard to keep that pace.”

What looked like a blowout was far from it as the Knights’ got the scoreboard to close the first quarter when Kye’mere Robinson hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass from Andrew DeArmitt.

Matthew Hooper intercepted Weihrauch and, four plays later, scored on a 35-yard reception from DeArmitt.

Springdale gained the momentum back heading into the locker room as they drove 60 yards in nine plays, eating up over six minutes of the game clock as Brayden Layhew scored from six yards out with 1:10 to play in the first half.

Late in the third quarter, Summit Academy pulled within a touchdown as Robinson took a short pass from DeArmitt and used some shifty moves to outrace the Dynamos defense for a 48-yard touchdown.

Kye’mere Robinson had a monster game for Summit Academy as he rushed for 102 yards on only eight carries while adding four catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Unfortunately for the Knights’ when Robinson scored with 1:11 to play in the third quarter, Summit Academy would not see the football again until 2:59 to play in the game.

Springdale put the game away in a bizarre sequence with a 19-play 72-yard drive that lasted nearly ten minutes.

Initially, the Dynamos appeared to be stopped as they punted after six plays, but a muffed punt gave them the ball back at their 35-yard line.

From there, they moved the football down the field and eventually scored on Weihrauch’s 1-yard run with 3:09 to play, sealing the victory.

“We looked like we had a first down on a 3rd-and-1, but then we take a holding penalty followed by a sack, and next thing we know, we’re punting from our end zone,” Tempalski said. “Special teams are such a big part of the game, and credit to our guys for knowing that situation and then driving the field – that was a huge sequence.”

Chase Weihrauch rushed for a game-high 147 yards on 23 carries, including 107 yards in the first half. He also completed 5-of-11 passes for 52 yards with an interception.

“Chase is the player we must lean on,” said Tempalski. “He makes the offense go with the decisions he makes running the read-option. I put that on him. He also came out and threw the ball well in the first half. He didn’t miss too many throws in that first quarter. Then he goes out and plays outstanding at safety for us. He’s a special player.”

Colton Gent chipped in with 67 yards on 11 carries, all in the second half, along with two interceptions.

Now that their 13-game skid is over, Springdale will look to keep the momentum going next Friday night when they host Leechburg.
