Springfield historic season ends with loss to Roman Catholic

The Springfield Cougars entered the PIAA 5A semi-final matchup with Roman Catholic undefeated with a 14-0 record and yet still were heavy underdogs by most people. Led by the dynamic duo of Sr RB Luke Valerio and Sr RB Tanner Coll the offense has been almost unstoppable all season averaging almost 38 points per game. Today against a physical Roman team Luke Valerio took the lead role and had some success against Roman rushing for a game high 128 yards this afternoon in the 48-20 defeat. While the passing game struggled as So Johnny Hopkins tossed 2 interceptions including a pick 6 the Cougars kept pounding the ball on the ground for 2 of their scores. The third score came late in the fourth quarter as Sr TJ Valletti found Jr WR Mike Neville in the endzone for a score.
Defensively Valletti was highly active mixing in 6 tackles and recovered a fumble while Jr LB Alex McGinnis recorded an interception.
Springfield had plenty of great times this season including Head Coach Chris Britton winning his 100th game earlier this season. The running tandem of Luke and Tanner both ran for 1000+ yards this season, TJ recording 4 interceptions and returning two for touchdowns. While the season didn’t culminate in a state title it will be in the history books as the most successful team in program history winning a record 14 games and winning their first ever district 1 championship. Despite the results today Springfield has plenty to look back on and be happy about on its 2025 season. They walked off the field as District 1 champions and knowing the seniors left the program better than where it was when they arrived 4 years ago as freshmen.
