Steubenville – Mistakes and miscues cost Farrell as Steubenville knocked off the Steelers 40-24 Friday night at Harding Stadium.

Despite battling the Big Red for four quarters, the Steelers came up short as mistakes and penalties were too much to overcome.

“This is probably one of the craziest games I’ve seen,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues.  “I don’t even know if I’m allowed to say it, but man, I’m missing our officials back in D10. Some of these calls are just unbelievable. We get to stop. It could have been 4th-and-long, then a personal foul, and some of the explanation was, well, it was no explanation at all. They never would say what or what was going on. And you know what, I mean, a kid might ask the referee a question, and we’re getting a personal foul call. That’s not me to blame the referees. Because, as I told the guys, we had to make sure we win the game and earn the win, not leaving it in somebody else’s hands.”

Things didn’t start on the right foot as Farrell found themselves in an early 10-0 hole a minute and 44 seconds into the second quarter.

Farrell had looked like they held on 4th-and-1, when they stopped Big Red quarterback Santino Haney for no gain. However, a facemask penalty kept the drive alive, leading to Cole Bowers’ booting a 36-yard field goal to open the scoring late in the first quarter.

Steubenville extended its lead when Tre’Von Wiggins caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Haney on 3rd-and-15 early in the second quarter.

After failing to gain a first down on their first three possessions, Farrell got their offense going as they drove 76 yards in eight plays—scoring on Aaron Pegues’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Juelz Johnson. Pegues had a 30-yard gain on the drive.

The Steelers then took their only lead of the night at 12-20 with 1:54 to play in the first half when Johnson stepped in front of a Haney pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

That it turned out would be the only mistake the Steubenville signal caller would make all night as they drove the Big Red 65 yards in eight plays, and they re-took the lead with 19 seconds to play in the half when Jerimiah Hinton caught a 9-yard touchdown from Haney.

Steubenville led 16-12 at halftime.

Santino Haney completed 17 of 19 passes for 176 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

The Big Red got the football and ate up nearly five minutes to begin the second half, scoring on Ca’juan Bryant’s 7-yard touchdown.

Farrell looked like they forced a punt after three plays, but were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, keeping the drive alive. They were penalized 30 yards on the drive.

“Playing in a place like Steubenville, you wonder why they get all these home games, and they play a lot of games in here because you know, it is what it is,” Pegues said. “My guys will regroup. We had an opportunity to win the game and that sort of thing, but we just couldn’t get it done. When you play in this kind of atmosphere, you’d better be on point or you’re not going to walk out of here with a win.”

Still, the Steelers fought back, and Juelz Johnson, as MaxPreps put it, “went beast mode,” breaking several tackles, reversing his field, and racing 54 yards for a touchdown, pulling Farrell to within 23-18 with 4:35 to play in the third quarter.

Despite the long run, Johnson was limited to 51 yards on eight carries, and his touchdown run was his lone rush of the second half as Farrell ran only 15 plays over the final 24 minutes.

One of which was a punt snap that resulted in a 19-yard loss, setting up Steubenville at the Steelers’ 1-yard line, where James Turner scored on the following play 27 seconds into the fourth quarter, giving the Big Red a 32-18 lead.

They had taken a 26-18 lead when Bowers booted his second field goal of the game to close out the third quarter.

Farrell continued to battle and pulled within eight points when Dorean Cain caught a 77-yard touchdown pass from Pegues with 10:54 to play.

Aaron Pegues led Farrell as he completed 9-of-17 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 69 yards rushing.

Steubenville put the game away on their possession when they drove 60 yards in six plays with Turner scoring on a 6-yard run.

Farrell returns to action next Friday night when they make the short trip to Sharpsville.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win this game, and I’m proud of my guys,” concluded Pegues. “We walked out of this game healthy. Nobody was really banged up, just a few cramps, so we’re healthy and we’ll move on to Sharpsville next week.”
