Kasey Hudson’s Kick Return Touchdown gives Haven the upper edge in victory

The Strath Haven Panthers took down the Unionville Longhorns 21-20 on Friday night.

Here were my thoughts prior to kickoff.

The game got underway, and the Panthers had the first ball. The run game of Ryan Mudrick and Yosef Ali began driving, but quickly faced a fourth-down decision. The Panthers elected to go on fourth down, and the decision did not pay off. Unionville takes over on the turnover on downs.

Unionville did not get anything going on their first drive and had to punt it away.

The Panthers rushed their way all the way down the field, with huge rushes from Yosef Ali and Kasey Hudson before the end of the first quarter. To start the second, Strath Haven lined up at the 1-yard line. Mulhern snapped the ball and was pushed forward for a QB Sneak TD. The Panthers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over Unionville with 11:20 remaining in the first half.

Unionville came right back out from the Haven score and began driving, with quality rushes from the QB Tommy McGinnis and star RB Brody McLaughlin. McLaughlin finished the job with a rush into the endzone for a Unionville score. The Longhorns tied the ballgame right back up with 8:27 left in the first half.

The Strath Haven Panthers needed to find an answer to the Longhorn TD, and they found just that. Landon Barlow got out to a fantastic start on the Panther drive, and Strath Haven began to move down the field at a great pace. The Panthers took the ball all the way down to the 1-yard line once again and opted to put the ball in the hands of their QB, Luke Mulhern. Mulhern snuck his way into the endzone once more for another Haven TD and a 14-7 lead over the Unionville Longhorns.

Unionville attempted to get something going before the end of the half, but the drive resulted in a turnover. Strath Havens Cole Haly took the ball away from the Longhorns, and the Panthers knelt out the remainder of the clock in the first half.

Here were my thoughts at halftime.

The Third quarter kicked off, and it was Unionville in possession of the ball. The Longhorns did get a few first downs before they faced fourth-down territory. The Longhorns elected to go on fourth down, and it did not pay off, a turnover on downs and Panther ball.

The Panthers faced fourth down on their first drive after the first three plays, resulting in very little yardage. The Panthers’ 4th down try was also unsuccessful, and the Longhorns took right back over.

Unionville had phenomenal field position after the turnover and started heading downfield almost immediately. The Longhorns busted out for a huge play, and just like that, the game was tied. 14-14, but the Panthers surely weren’t going to go out without a fight.

The Longhorns kicked off, and Kasey Hudson returned for the Panthers. Hudson had multiple blocks that took him across midfield before he found even more open space, allowing him to make a play for the endzone, in which he crossed over the pylons and answered the Longhorns with a touchdown of his own. Hudson went 86 yards on the kick return touchdown and changed the momentum and trajectory of the game in favor of the Panthers.

Unionville needed an answer with time ticking down on the clock, and they eventually found one. Multiple completions and rushing plays for first downs and huge yardage set the Longhorns up deep in Haven territory. The Unionville snap was handed off to Brody McLaughlin, who bulldozed his way into the endzone for a Unionville score. But the XP was wide right, and Strath Haven still had the lead 21-20 with 7:01 left in the game.

Strath Haven punted on their next drive and gave it back to Unionville, who quickly faced fourth down with their season on the line. The fourth down attempt was unsuccessful once again, and Strath Haven held on to take down Unionville by an extra point.

The Panthers will now advance to the third round of the District 1 5A playoffs and will have a rematch against the Cougars of Springfield.

Here were my closing thoughts as the game winded to an end at Strath Haven.

After the game, I got to catch up with Strath Haven running back Kasey Hudson. Hudson’s kick return touchdown gave the Panthers the edge over Unionville.
