PHILADELPHIA – No matter what these two teams’ records are, the matchup between them is always a competitive one, and that was no different this time around either. Thanks to their strong defensive performance, West Catholic (4-2) defeated Archbishop Carroll (3-4) by a score of 24-6.
This game was clearly going to come down to whose defense could play better and ultimately that was West Catholic’s, however Archbishop Carroll’s defense did also play very well for most of the game. Other than a touchdown on the Burrs opening drive, the Patriots defense held very strong for almost the entirety of the first half. That touchdown for West Catholic came on a 45 yard passing play from Josiah Everett to Nadir Lewis.

The problem for Archbishop Carroll was the offense, they couldn’t get anything going in the first half. Even when the defense made plays to set the offense up in good position such as the fumble recovery at West Catholic’s 40 yard line, the offense still struggled. A big factor to this was when quarterback Chris Sponburgh was knocked out of the game for three entire drives due to injury.
At the end of the first half is when the Patriots’ defense looked like it was beginning to break down, as a beautifully executed drive from West Catholic was capped off with a 5 yard touchdown pass to Basir McCoy, giving the Burrs a 16-0 lead heading into halftime.

On the opening possession of the second half, West Catholic chewed up almost five minutes of clock on their way to their third touchdown of the day. The score came on a 4 yard pass to Jozai Bonelli, giving Everett his third touchdown pass of the day.
More of the same defensive dominance was shown in the third quarter from the Burrs’ defense. That was until the Patriots drove into West Catholic territory, and made it all the way down to the goal line, where on 4th and goal, Archbishop Carroll tried to sneak it in with sophomore tight end Ceasar Richardson but came up short of the goal line.

The Patriots were finally able to break through in the fourth quarter, with a 60 yard touchdown pass to James Davin, but they were not able to convert the two point conversion so it was still a three score game. Archbishop Carroll actually came up with a takeaway on the following drive, giving them some hope. However this was quickly put to rest as West Catholic’s defense got an interception to steal the ball right back.

The rest of the game featured some clock chewing for West Catholic as well as a strip sack by Jj Robinson, which put the final nail in the coffin of the victory for the Burrs.
With the victory, West Catholic moves to 4-2 on the season and will be on the road next week to face Neumann-Goretti. After the loss, Archbishop Carroll falls to 3-4 on the season, and they’ll be back at home next week to face Archbishop Ryan.
