Sharpsville – Caullin Summers collected 489 yards of offense and seven total touchdowns as Sharpsville cruised past Reynolds 62-20 Thursday night at “The Pines.”

In only three games this season, Summers has passed for 1009 yards and 16 touchdowns as the Blue Devils have scored 182 points, averaging over 60 points a game.

On a different storyline, Thursday night was Sharpsville’s defense limiting the Raiders to 251 yards in offense and seeing its first-team defense surrender only a single score.

“Defensively, we put a lot of time and effort into that this week,” said Sharpsville head coach Paul Piccirilli. “It has improved, but it’s far from where it needs to be for the teams late in our schedule. We will keep working on it, and Caullin needs to keep being Caullin. I’ve never seen anyone like him; he’s great at finding the open player, and we have a couple of guys that can fly down the field and make plays.”

Before the game, the Blue Devils had given up 45 points a game against their first two opponents in Wilmington and Titusville.

Oddly enough, despite Summers’ offensive stats, his interception in the first quarter got the ball rolling as following the turnover, he tossed a 23-yard touchdown to Jaiden White.

After holding the Raiders on downs, one play later, Summers connected with Dalton Byerly from 42 yards out as the ‘Devils led 14-0 after a quarter.

Five plays after holding Reynolds on fourth-and-goal, Kyle Vigotty made his lone carry county as he punched in a 7-yard run, giving the Blue Devils a 20-0 lead.

Reynolds would get on the scoreboard on their ensuing drive when Xavier Zachrich broke free on a 76-yard scoring run. Zachrich led the Raiders with 78 yards rushing on three attempts.

Sharpsville answered in time, driving 63 yards in 12 plays and scoring on Summers’ 1-yard run.

The Blue Devils invoked the mercy clock for the second half with two touchdowns 13 seconds apart in the final 26 seconds of the first half.

The first came when Summers threw a 10-yard touchdown to Killian Whalen, capping a 49-yard drive – Jordan White then recovered a fumble in the end zone, bringing the halftime score to 41-6.

The second half saw its fair share of big plays as Summers threw third-quarter touchdown passes of 37 yards to Byerly and 60 yards to Kalvin McCullough.

Dalton Byerly was Summers’ favorite target, catching seven passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

“We only lost three guys on offense last year,” Piccirilli said. “They were great players, but we’ve picked up much of the slack, although we could be better in certain areas. Defensively, we lost eight starters, and that is where our needs are right now.”

Zachrich ran a kickoff back 78 yards in between third-quarter scores by the ‘Devils.

Caullin Summers then capped off a superb outing by throwing for his sixth touchdown on an 83-yard score to Aiden Puskar.

Sharpsville will aim for a 4-0 start next Friday night when they host Slippery Rock at West Middlesex.

Reynolds capped the scoring by driving 60 yards in seven plays as Gavin Alabran scored on a 26-yard run with 2:48 to play.

The Raiders will look to bounce back next week when they host Cambridge Springs.

“That’s a great football over there, I’m not going to make excuses,” said Reynolds head coach Josh Mull. “I stood in that locker room and told those kids to give me a half of football, and that’s exactly what they did. We have a bunch of young guys out there that played their buts off, and you saw that, especially in the second half.”
