WEST CHESTER: All offseason, West Chester East Viking’s Chase Szollose worked on his conditioning on Thursday Night. He showed how much his hard work has paid off. In addition to playing on the Vikings offense, Szollose returned kicks, played on the defensive side of the ball, punted, and kicked extra points. On offense, he found the endzone two times to go along with a kickoff return touchdown to propel the host Vikings to a convincing 27-7 victory over Upper Moreland Bears at Harrold Zimmerman Stadium

“It’s lot of conditioning I practiced it all offseason, running sprints, then kicking sprints. I know what I can do, and I’m going to do it to help my team.” Szollose said on being the Swiss-army knife for the Vikings.

Szollose wasted little time getting things started. On the game’s opening kickoff, he found an opening, and it was off to the races he went, going 94 yards for the touchdown, then adding the extra point, putting the Vikings up 7-0 lead a mere 18 seconds into the game.

“Chase Szollose is a hell of an athlete. I was hoping they might kick to him. They (Upper Moreland) kicked it deep enough, have a good kicker, and it gave us time to set up.” Vikings Head Coach Dean Owens said, adding, “Chase set the tone all night. He’s taking a beaten on both sides of the ball, he’s going down kicking extra points after taking back a kick. He was all over the field tonight.”

After the Vikings forced the Golden Bears to turn the ball over on downs at the Vikings’ 17, their offense came back on the field and put together a 13-play drive that ended with Szollose taking it into the endzone from 30 yards out, putting the Vikings up 14-0 after 1 quarter.

After James Kernicky recovered a Bears fumble at midfield, the Vikings needed only one play to extend their lead with Logan Cummings connecting with a wide-open Chase Golden for the touchdown to make it 20-0.

With less than a minute left in the first half, the Bears got on the scoreboard, capping a 7-play 65-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass from David Adamski to Kyle Moore, cutting the Vikings’ lead to 20-7 heading into the locker room at halftime.

In the fourth quarter, following a 31-yard punt by Cummings that pinned the Bears at their own 4, the Bears fumbled the ball on their first play, and Caleb Komorowski fell on it at the Bears 2. On the very next play, Szollose powered his way in for his third score of the night and his three-touchdown game in high school.

Szollose finished the game with 13 carries for 83 yards.  Szollose knew he couldn’t have had the game he had alone, offering praise to his offensive line, which was made of John Hoffman, Kevin Rivas, Landon Messina, Dylan Buddenhagen, and Tyler Duell. “They were huge, great holes Kevin Rivas Dylan Buddenhagen pulling for me all night, picking up blocks, it was amazing.”

Next week, the Vikings will look to improve to 3-0 in Owens’s first season when they host Upper Merion on Friday at 7 pm at Zimmerman Stadium. The Bears will look for their second win of the season when they travel to Lower Moreland next Saturday for a 1 pm kickoff
