Turkey Taste Better When You Win

Like Coach Toman said after the game, turkey taste better when you win. And the holiday feasts in Northampton were tasting mighty good, after the Konkrete Kids shut out the Rough Riders of Catasauqua 45-0 at Alumni Field, Catasauqua, in the 102 meeting of this Turkey Day tradition that started in 1925. And they have a Sr QB Gavin Taff led offense, passing for 4TDs and rushing for another, plus a stingy defense that kept Catasauqua off the board all day to thank for it. For Catasauqua, the numbers don’t lie, they were dominated by the Kids. But Coach Henrich’s players played hard on offense and defense, making plays, but just not enough of them. One of the bright spots for the Rough Riders was Sr RB/LB Trayshawn Dunn, he was Caty’s leading rusher with 805yds coming into the game. He was voted Catasauqua’s MVP of the game.

Northampton’s MVP was Gavin Taff, who on his 4th touchdown pass of the day and the 41st of his career, tied the career mark for TD passes for the Kids. He already held career passing yards and receptions records, making him arguably the best quarterback in Northampton’s history. Another outstanding player super sophomore Chase Kessler broke Northampton’s single season rushing record of 1458, with a 9 carry 70yd performance putting him at 1501 for the season and the record. Record setting day and a win made the turkey and all the trimmings taste better in Northampton.

The Kids won the toss and elected to receive, and after a squib kick because of a strong wind, they started 1st and ten at their own 43yd line. Sr TB/OLB Zander Rickert ran 47yds to the Caty 20yd line. That set up Gavin Taff to Dom Barkanic for 34yds and the score at 10:12 in the 1st quarter and 2pt conversion Northampton led 8-0

The Rough Riders had a nice drive going, putting the ball in four different players hands Dunn, Lafond, Estronza and Bolmer, but on 2nd and ten from the 41yd line of Northampton, Estronza was called for intentional grounding and the drive stalled with Caty giving the ball back and a short field to Northampton. Chase Kessler ran 17yds to the Caty 22yd line, then 5yds more to the 17yd line and on 3rd & 5 Gavin Taff ran 17yds for the score. Hit multiple times, he looked like he was stopped, but not to be denied dragging players into the end zone at 5:50 in the 1st quarter. A failed 2pt attempt and Northampton led 14-0

The Rough Riders went three and out and punted to Northampton, who started on their own 40yd line and after only advancing to mid field and pinned Caty at their own 9yd line. But another three and out gave the Kids great field position at Caty’s 37yd line, and on 1st and ten Chase Kessler ran 10yds to the 27yd line and broke the single season rushing record for Northampton. The next play went to Sr TB/OLB Zeke Spencer who was returning from injury for the second time this season and he ran it in for the score at 10:38 in the 2nd quarter, plus a 2pt conversion Northampton led 22-0.

Things did not better for Caty on the next drive, a high snap caused a fumble, that was recovered by Northampton on Catasauqua’s 12yd line and on 2nd and fifteen from the 17yd line Gavin Taff hits his favorite target this season Sr WR/FS Cameron Hersch for the score at 7:45 in the 2nd quarter. Kids led 30-0

Catasauqua’s offense got a 1st down and made it to 3rd and three at their own 44yd line after starting at the 25yd line, but a run by Estronza lost 2 yds and Caty was forced to punt and the Kids started at their own 33yd line. And with a mix of run and pass plays that set up on 2nd and goal from the 5yd line Taff to Joey High for the score with a 2pt conversion with 25 seconds left in the half Northampton led 38-0 and that would be the half time score as well.

Not much happened in the second half, except Gavin Taff getting career #41 passing touchdown that tied a school record, to Sr Noah WR from the 7yd line at 6:17 in the 3rd quarter. Northampton led 45-0 and that would be the final score.

That’s how #102 went today and Northampton now leads the series 65-33-4.

John Fox caught up with Zeke Spencer who talked about coming back from injury to finish his Sr season with a win and a touchdown.

John Fox also talked to Super Soph Chase Kessler who ended his season with Northampton’s single season rushing record.

Could not forget Gavin Taff 4 passing and 1 rushing TDs on the, with the last one tying a school record for the season at 41.

And Coach John Toman after his team shut out Caty on his teams performance and achievements.
