HOLLIDAYSBURG – Last season when these two sides met, we were treated to an incredible game as it was eventually decided by a final score of 37-29, a mere 8 point difference. Now with both sides entering the matchup with 4-0 records, we were expected to see an even better game, and for one side, it was an incredible game. Hollidaysburg (5-0) rode a 21 point surge in the third quarter to an eventual 49-14 victory over Mifflinburg (4-1).

The opening quarter of this game feautured plenty of action. After forcing a three and out on Mifflinburg’s opening drive, the Golden Tiger’s offense took the field and wasted no time finding the end zone. Quarterback Cole DeLattre led a 9 play, 67 yard drive that ended with a 21 yard touchdown pass to Josh Banks. Following that drive, Hollidaysburg’s defense did its thing again, strip sacking Mifflinburg quarterback Chad Martin and taking over deep in Wildcat territory.

The Golden Tigers only needed another 6 plays to capitalize on the turnover, finishing the drive off with a 4 yard run from quarterback Cole DeLattre and putting the Golden Tigers up 14-0 with 2 minutes left in the first. Mifflinburg finally answered on the next drive, and they only needed one play to do so. Chad Martin found Landen Murray deep down the middle of the field and connected with him for a 76 yard score. But before they could even settle back in, Hollidaysburg struck yet again, as Carter Muth took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards back to the end zone, his first of three touchdowns on the night, putting the Golden Tigers back ahead by 14.

Mifflinburg’s offense came right back onto the field, and their next drive was much more methodical than their previous three drives. After the first three plays of the drive we entered the second quarter, and the Wildcats’ offense just keep moving downfield. They ended up driving all the way to the 7 yard line, setting up a golden opportunity to strike right back. A sack on first down ended up dooming the Wildcats, as the loss of 11 yards moving them back to the 18 yard line was too much to overcome. Hollidaysburg’s defense ended up holding the Wildcats off the scoreboard completely following a huge sack of fourth down, and just like that, the 13 play, 66 yard drive went to waste for Mifflinburg.

Hollidaysburg’s defense actually was thrusted right back into action shortly after getting the stop as just two plays into the Golden Tigers’ drive, Cole DeLattre’s deep pass fell into the arms of Mifflinburg’s Jackson Marr. The defense stood strong again for Hollidaysburg however, forcing a turnover on downs for the second straight drive, after running back Seth Hartman came up inches short of the line to gain on a 4th and 2, setting the Golden Tigers up in Mifflinburg territory once again. They didn’t need long to capitalize once again, as a 36 yard carry by Carter Muth on the third play of the drive capped it off and increased the Golden Tigers’ lead to 21 points.

The biggest part of this game was the Golden Tigers’ ability to force turnovers on defense, they already had forced three to this point and on the very next drive the did it again knocking the ball out of Jackson Marr’s hands at the 6 yard line. This was now the second time that the Wildcats offense could not finish off a drive where they made it inside the red zone. As they say though, third time’s the charm. After forcing a punt on Hollidaysburg’s next drive, Chad Martin led a beautifully executed 6 play, 53 yard drive that ended in a 4 yard run from Martin himself, finally converting in the red zone and cutting the lead back to 14 heading into halftime.

“We just gotta take the positives from the first half, obviously not the way we want to start a game or finish going into halftime. They’ve got a special teams score, we’ve got a fumble in the red zone, we didn’t convert in the red zone, it’s still a 14 point game, there’s a lot of football left and we feel good about where we’re at,” Mifflinburg head coach Cody Botts said when he was asked about the issues in the first half.

Coach DeLattre’s message to his guys in the second half was very simple “We just gotta play better.” Entering the second half with a 14 point lead, the Golden Tigers took control of the game and ran with it. The opening drive of the second half featured a 9 play, 61 yard drive that ended in a 7 yard score from Josh Banks, which was his second of the night. After that, Hollidaysburg forced a quick three and out and took right back over on offense, and on just the second play of the drive, Carter Muth took the ball 78 yards all the way to the endzone, extending the lead to 28 points.

The game was falling apart for Mifflinburg and once again they were forced to punt on their next drive. 6 plays later, Hollidaysburg found the dagger, on a 24 yard scramble by quarterback Cole DeLattre, putting the Golden Tigers ahead by 35 points with just over a minute left in the third quarter. If that score wasn’t the final nail in the coffin, then the next drive for Mifflinburg certainly was, as on the first play of the fourth quarter Chad Martin heaved the ball as far down the field as he could and was eventually intercepted. The interception sent the game into a mercy rule running clock in the fourth quarter and the rest of the game was history.

“Controlling the line of scrimmage in our run game, Carter [Muth] had a great game and its due to the offensive line play,” Hollidaysburg head coach Homer DeLattre said when asked what impressed him most about the win. “They had a great defensive line up front, 75 is a troublemaker and we were able to get our hands on him and able to get some touch to bounce some things to the perimeter, and we did a real good job of taking what was there.”

“Everyone was saying how they were going to beat us, and it feels good to come in and win,” running back Carter Muth said after the game. “I feel like we had a really good game with turnovers on the defensive side and a lot of yards on the offensive side.”

With the victory, Hollidaysburg moves to 5-0 on the season, they’ll have a matchup at home next week with Fort Hill out of Maryland. Mifflinburg will drop to 4-1 on the season with the loss, they will also be back at home next week with a matchup against Milton who is 1-4 on the season.
