After trailing most of the game, the Trinity Shamrocks are moving on in the State Playoffs after an improbable come from behind victory in the waning minutes of the game. After falling behind 16-7 at half, Trinity rallied in the 2nd half, outscoring Neumann-Goretti 19-6. The late game heroics were powered by their Sr. QB, Mason Boyer, who impacted the game with both his arm and his legs, as he had a rushing TD and passing TD to close out the comeback victory, as well as another rushing TD early on. He also had a clutch TD catch from his Sr. WR, Keyon Nimmons to pull within 2 before the final comeback drive. Trinity’s experienced senior players proved their worth and will be a tough out for whoever they face next.
The game started with Neumann-Goretti receiving the 1st half kickoff, which they returned to their own 25. After a sloppy first series, which included a fumble that lost 9 yards and an INT, Trinity took over at the NG 24 yard line.
Trinity then struggled to get the ground game going, as 2 failed runs resulted in -3 net yards and 2 incompletions turned the ball over on downs back to Neumann-Goretti at their own 26 yard line.
It was here that Neumann-Goretti would lead a long TD drive, that included big runs from their RB duo of Makhi Mitchell and A’mar Woodson of 12 yards and 28 yards, respectively. The run-heavy drive would conclude with Woodson punching in a 6 yard TD, and a successful 2 pt try from Marquis Coleman to Matthew Gargano.
After a long Trinity drive, which brought them to the Neumann-Goretti 33 yard line, they faced a 4th and 7 and were forced to punt, which the Saints blocked, and returned to the Trinity 34 yard line.
Neumann-Gorretti failed to take advantage of the field position they were gifted, as Makhi Mitchell caught a 9 yard pass, but was stopped twice in the backfield after and in incompletion on 4th down turned the ball back over on downs to Trinity at their own 29 yard line.
After a Trinity 3 and out, NG started their next possession at their own 32 following a punt. After a splash play from Coleman to Luke Rachunbinski, that was a 32 yard bomb, Coleman would throw an INT only 2 plays later in Trinity territory at the 39 yard line, which was returned to the NG 3 yard line. Trinity wasted no time, as Boyer ran it in to cut Trinity’s deficit to 8-7.
After the ensuing kickoff was returned to the Neumann-Goretti 37, 2 rushes from Mitchell and a facemask on Trinity, brought the ball to the Trinity 37, where Woodson ran for 8 yards and Mitchell ran for a combined 29 yards, culminating in his 7 yard TD. Coleman hit Gargano again for the 2 pt try to extend the NG lead to 16-7.
After a couple Brandon Harris runs on the next Trinity possession and a few short passes, Boyer’s long pass was intercepted by NG in the end zone and returned to their own 4, where the Saints kneeled down for the half. The score was 16-7 Saints.
Trinity received the 2nd half kickoff and returned it to their own 37. Brandon Harris took over, as he had runs of 10, 29, and 6. After getting to the NG 8 yard line, Boyer found Jr. TE, Adam Dalton for the TD that cut the NG deficit to 16-14.
The Saints took the kickoff to their own 23 yard line, where they punted after 1 first down on the ground. The punt was downed by Trinity at their own 37.
After a long Trinity drive, which included penalties on both sides and a PI on NG, Trinity moved the ball to the NG 42 and the drive stalled after an illegal procedure penalty on Trinity, which moved the ball back to the NG 47, they were forced to punt from the NG 44 after a short Harris run.
NG took over at their own 8 yard line following the punt. Woodson and Mitchell together powered the NG offense to their 40 yard line to end the 3rd. However, the drive would stall after Woodson was stopped for a loss and a no gain, forcing a 3rd down incompletion and a punt.
Trinity took over at their own 8 and punted as well after a 3 and out.
NG would take over at the Trinity 40 following a long punt return. Woodson would rush for 13 and 17 on the next 2 plays, but a 5 yard loss by him, as well as incompletions and a 7 yard sack would turn the ball over on downs to Trinity at their own 12.
Trinity would also come up empty on the possession, as 2 short carries and a short completion would set up 4th and 1, which SR. WR Maddox Jarzynski was stuffed in the backfield for NG to take over at the Trinity 20.
NG would take advantage of the short field, as 4 straight Woodson carries of 3, 4, 10, and 3 would have them in the end zone which would give the Saints a 22-14 lead following a failed 2 pt try.
Adam Dalton returned the kickoff to the Trinity 45. Boyer hit Jarzynski for a 15 yard pass, aided by a roughing the passer penalty and a defensive holding on the Saints the next play, which had the ball at the NG 15. A short completion and 10 yard TD to Keyon Nimmons brought Trinity within 2, 22-20 after a failed 2 pt try.
With just under 2 minutes to go, the ensuing onside kick was recovered by Trinity at the NG 45, giving them a chance to win the game. Boyer hit his sophomore WR, Mason Noecker and Sr. RB, Adonis Sutton for gains of 12 and 13, respectively. A long completion to the 3 yard line set up Boyer’s 3 yard go ahead TD run with 11.5 seconds to go. The 2 pt try was no good leaving the score 26-22 Trinity.
The kickoff was returned to the NG 37. With 4 seconds left, NG tried a lateral and one forward pass, but were tackled well short of the end zone, leaving that to be the final score.
