The visiting Hamburg Hawks downed the Annville-Cleona Dutchmen at AC Stadium Friday night by a score if 27-14. The Dutchmen did everything they could do to win this game, but the one thing that was missing was a Tyler Shuey. He plays for Hamburg and he was the difference in the game along with the Hawk defense when they were needed the most. Hamburg goes to 3-1 with the win and Annville-Cleona falls to 1-3.
All Mr. Shuey did was run for a pair of scores and throw for another, and in doing so, the Hawks of Hamburg never trailed in this game. The visitors made the most of just three possessions as the Dutchmen defense limited Hamburg to just a measly 177 yards. Shuey accounted for 141 of those yards. “Ty does a great job of communicating. He does a great job and he listens. The guys trust him,” stated the head coach of Hamburg, Matt Hoffert.
In fact, one could say Annville-Cleona outplayed Hamburg based on yardage and time of possession. A-C gained 274 yards, most of which was via the ground game. That was almost 100 yards more than Hamburg garnered. As far as time of possession goes, Hamburg had the ball a little over 14 minutes out of 48. That is usually not a recipe for winning football games.
On Hamburg’s second drive Shuey ran for 46 yards on the second play of a 5-play drive and three plays later scampered in from eight yards out to draw first blood. That 7-0 lead held until just 5 minutes left in the first half.
That was when John Shay tied the game with the first of his two touchdowns. His 3-yard run capped an 8-play, 38-yard drive for the Dutchmen hat used up four minutes. The short field came as a result of Annville-Cleona forcing Hamburg to punt from their own 13.

Hamburg answered quickly. Seven plays took the Hawks to the endzone. Shuey scored his second rushing touchdown of the game on a 16-yard jaunt. He was instrumental with his arm too, twice connecting with Daniel Brady for twelve and then eighteen yards to give the birds first downs. The PAT was missed, so the Hawks held on to the 13-7 lead into halftime.
Annville-Cleona received the second half kick but could do nothing on either of their first two possessions. Hamburg did make something of their second drive. They went 73 yards on 7 plays to score a third touchdown at the 3:25 mark of the third. The big play was the 38-yard TD toss from Shuey to Ty Werley to now make it a two-score game.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Dutchmen drove to the Hawk 10, but a quarterback sneak gained one yard and not the two needed for a first down as the Hamburg ‘D’ came through with the stop. The defense also created two turnovers during the contest, recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass.
“They fought to the end,” said Hoffert about Annville-Cleona, “I’ve coached with Matt Gingrich before so I knew they’d be ready.”
Finally, with time running down, Annville-Cleona scored on another John Shay run to make it 20-14 setting up the onsides kick. To the fortune of Hamburg and the misfortune of Annville the ball bounced right to Werley who grabbed it, found a seam, and raced about 50 yards to seal the game for the Hawks. ‘Werley has no fear, so he’s going after it,” said Hoffert.
Shuey was happy with his performance and said that it was a huge win, the first league win, and he hopes it carries over to next week.
Hamburg will host 0-4 Kutztown next week while Annville-Cleona will host 0-4 Columbia.
