Tyrone Clinches District 6 Playoff Berth in 28-7 Win Over Philipsburg-Osceola

TYRONE Tyrone’s defense forced four turnovers and held their opponent to 89 second-half yards en route to a 28-7 blowout of Philipsburg-Osceola. In a pivotal win-and-you’re-in matchup, the Golden Eagles did not leave it to chance, taking an early 7-0 lead and never looking back. Between Philipsburg’s penalties and Tyrone’s dominant defense, the Mounties found it tough to establish any rhythm offensively on a very important evening.

As fans packed into Gray Veterans Field, the playoff stakes were front and center. No one knew that better than Tyrone, who came out of the gates swinging, quickly forcing a 3-and-out on Philipsburg’s first possession. While Tyrone forced many quick drives (4 of 9 of PO’s offensive possessions were five plays or shorter), their ability to force turnovers would prove to be the real key of the game. Afterward, Coach Franco said, “We preach winning the turnover ratio. That’s the first thing on our goal chart every week.” That’s a good goal for the Golden Eagles, as they are now 5-0 in games where they win the turnover battle, going +4 tonight in the metric. Furthermore, they forced the turnovers at the right time, with three of their four interceptions coming in their own territory, playing fabled bend-but-don’t-break defense to secure the important win.

According to Coach Franco, “Compared to PO teams in the past, they look like they know what they want to do and it’s tough to defend.” The Mounties actually outgained Tyrone 220 to 215, in large part due to RB Colton Chapman’s 170 yards on an insane 34 carries (5 yards per carry), but they were never able to finish off their long drives. Philipsburg’s average ending field position on their nine possessions was the Tyrone 31, and they ran 46 plays in Golden Eagle territory (66 total) yet scored only seven points. Largely, their drives stalled after turnovers (4) or as a result of penalties, which were a huge issue for the offense. Philipsburg had 10 penalties for 90 yards, compared to Tyrone’s two for 22. It’s tough to win any game with that many turnovers and penalties, but the Mounties were still in the game until the 8:10 mark of the fourth quarter, when Tyrone’s Ashton Emigh returned an interception 37 yards for a score, igniting the home crowd.

“This was a big night for the Emighs,” Coach Franco beamed, as the two brothers certainly left their mark on the game. Ashton Emigh’s game-sealing interception returned for a touchdown was the most important play of the second half, crushing any hope for a scrappy Philipsburg team that fought through the final whistle. Ashton’s brother, Mason, may have had the most important play of the first half, leaving the crowd stunned after a beautiful high-point catch on a 26-yard touchdown that pushed the score to 14-0 before the half. Mason finished the game with three receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Tonight, Tyrone clinched their fifth straight playoff berth and their sixth in the last ten seasons. Tyrone also increased their streak of wins over Philipsburg to 20, an unprecedented number. For the Mounties, they have been steadily improving since 2020 and will have one more chance in the crossover game to get their young team to Philipsburg’s first five-win season since 2011. Tyrone faced an uphill battle to reach the playoffs this season amidst a tough District 6 Class 3A, but if their defense plays as well as it did tonight, they can hang with anyone.

Next week, Philipsburg-Osceola (4-5) will take on Bedford (2-7), while Tyrone (5-4) will play Chestnut Ridge (4-5).
