TYRONE — Tyrone struck first and never looked back in front of their home crowd, gaining 465 yards and scoring five rushing touchdowns on their way to upsetting Huntingdon 41-21. Tyrone never trailed, and entered halftime with a 28-7 lead, on one of the best defenses in the Laurel Highlands. To this point, the Bearcat defense had held opponents to just 133.6 rushing yards per game in their five wins. For comparison, Tyrone had only rushed for an average of 96.8 yards in their first six games. Tonight, the Golden Eagles flipped the script entirely, rushing for 259 yards and five touchdowns, a week after being shut out by Bishop Guilfoyle.

The offensive explosion was led by junior running back Caleb Whitby, who rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns, a week after being held to just four yards by the Marauders. Whitby scored two quick touchdowns early in the game, from 12 yards and 17 yards out, before the five-minute mark of the first quarter. Tyrone head coach John Franco described Whitby as “very explosive and great in space,” as the young back was everywhere tonight. The Golden Eagle defense set the tone early, forcing two Huntingdon three-and-outs that led to the two Whitby touchdowns, putting Huntingdon in a 14 point hole that they never quite could climb out of. That physicality on defense translated to the offense, allowing Tyrone to gain 259 yards on the ground.

“Our entire offensive line probably played their best game of the year tonight,” Coach Franco stated, noting “by having a good running game, it allowed us to utilize our entire offense and not just part of it.” The Golden Eagles definitely utilized every part of their offense, as they drove their way to their best offensive output of the year, 47 total yards more than their game against Westmont, against a top defense in the conference. Tyrone also stretched the field on third down, going 3/3 for 35 yards on this pivotal down. To ice the game, the offense had a huge 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter, going from their own 20 to the opposing 20 and burning 7:11 of clock to end Huntingdon’s chance of a comeback.

The Bearcat offense struggled to find footing, gaining just 74 yards in the first quarter and only 219 in the entire game, compared with Tyrone’s 465. However, it was not all bad for Huntingdon, as their star RB Landon Erdman rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Turnovers became an issue for the Bearcats late in the game, when they gave the ball away twice in the final five minutes.

On an evening that many believed could help to solidify the playoff picture, it grew even more complicated. With Tyrone taking the upset over Huntingdon, that puts two teams (Penn Cambria and Forest Hills) at six wins, Huntingdon at five, and two teams (Tyrone and Philipsburg-Osceola) at four. Only four teams can make the district playoffs. Coach Franco understands that “when you’re looking at the playoff picture, our backs are against the wall.” As we head into the final three weeks of regular season play, both Huntingdon and Tyrone will need to continue winning to push themselves towards a coveted spot in the District 6 playoffs. The key questions that must be answered are obvious: Is Tyrone’s offense going to keep rolling, and can Huntingdon recover from their misstep?

Next week, Huntingdon (5-2) will travel to play Bedford (2-5), while Tyrone (4-3) will travel up the mountain for a 2024 District 6 Championship rematch with Penn Cambria (6-1).
