
Upper St. Clair dominates over conference opponent South Fayette

The Upper St. Clair Panthers won in dominate fashion in their 5A Allegheny Six Conference matchup against the South Fayette Lions 50-14.
Upper St. Clair received the first half kickoff and drove down the field putting the first points on the board with a Jacobo Echeverria Lozano field goal making the score 3-0 early in the first quarter.
South Fayette answered back with a score of their own as QB Drew Whelhorsky hit WR Tyson Wright who would walk into the endzone giving the Lions a 7-3 lead with eight minutes and 35 seconds to go in the first quarter.
The Panthers got the ball right back and proceeded to drive once more down the field and RB Dante Coury would score his first touchdown of the night that put the Panthers up 10-7 after a successful Lazano extra point.
The Lions once again had an answer for the Panthers as Whelhorsky took the ball himself running in for South Fayette’s second touchdown of the game and his second total touchdown of the night. This put the Lions up 14-10 with a minute and three seconds left on the clock.
The Panthers went up 16-14 early in the second quarter as QB Ethan Hellmann found John Banbury for his first touchdown pass of the night.
The Lions went three and out and punted for the first time all game. The Lions pinned the Panthers deep in their own territory. This didn’t affect the Panthers and Hellmann threw his second touchdown of the game to Bryce Jones extending their lead to 23-14.
South Fayette went three and out having to punt for the second straight drive. This allowed Hellmann and the Panthers to drive down into the red zone where Lozano kicked his second field goal of the night making the score 26-14 with two minutes and 50 seconds left to go till halftime.
South Fayette went on a solid two-minute drive before Whelhorsky threw his first interception of the night to Nico Dorazio who set the Panthers up in scoring position with seconds remaining till halftime. Lozano made his third field goal of the game extending the Panthers lead 29-14.
The Lions had some life as Coury fumbled, and Bryce Watkins recovered. The Lions failed to capitalize as they punted once more.
The Panthers stormed down the field and Coury rebounded off his fumble scoring his second touchdown of the night extending their lead to 36-14.
The Lions couldn’t get anything going and they gave the ball right back to the Panthers scored once again off a Josh Snyder touchdown run making the score 43-14.
The Lions attempted to score again but their attempt fell short as Whelhorsky was picked off by Dorazio for the second time.
Luca Coury ran in for the Panthers ninth score of the game. The Lions tried to keep a sustainable drive going but Whelhorsky was picked off by Andrew Gather for his third interception of the night.
Upper St. Clair moves to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. They will be at home against Bethel Park next week with a kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile for South Fayette they move to
5-2 overall and 1-1in class 5A. They will be at home against Peters Township with that game also set to kick off at 7:00 p.m.
