
Valley View’s Defense Comes Up Big in Win over Wilkes-Barre Area

After Valley View failed to get the two point conversion, it looked like the Wolf Pack were going to come out victorious in this matchup. However, The defense came up big with an interception and as Wilkes-Barre Area was driving down the field. Gianni Marino got an interception to seal the game as the Cougars defeated the Wolf Pack 25-20. “Our defense is our strength.” Said Valley View Head Coach Scot Wasilchak. “Gianni has been finding his way little by little and he came up with that big play tonight.”

Wilkes-Barre Area got the opening kickoff and drove down the field into Valley View territory. However, the opening possession ended in a punt, Valley View’s first possession resulted in a punt as well. The Wolf Pack got the ball with great field position. They faced a fourth and three at the four yard and Jake Howe found Treyvon Gembitski to make it 7-0 in favor of Wilkes-Barre Area.

The Cougars answered on their next drive, ending with a Zach Cwalinski on a three yard touchdown to tie the game at 7. Valley View’s defense answered with an interception by Tim Ulkoski at the Wilkes-Barre 48 yard line. However, the Cougars were unable to capitalize and punted the ball back to the Wolf Pack. After a turnover on downs, the game went to halftime tied up.

Valley View got the second half kickoff and chewed off almost half of the third quarter. They tried to take the lead with a field goal from 41 yards out and it was no good to the left. It took Wilkes-Barre Area four plays to get to the end zone as Howe went to Gembitsky again from 31 yards out to make it 14-7 with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter.

The Cougars got the kickoff and drove down the field as the third quarter came to an end. Early in the fourth quarter, Cwalinski found Gianni Marino for a 22 yard touchdown. The PAT was blocked and the Wolf Pack retained the lead at 14-13 with 11:09 remaining in the game. Wilkes-Barre Area got a great return from Davon Underwood who got the ball to the Valley View 33 yard line. Underwood finished the six play drive with a three yard touchdown to make it 20-13 with 8:53 to go in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars got the ball at their own 37 yard line. They used their running game and ended the drive with Cwalinski connecting with Beyon McLean who made a spectacular 29 yard catch for a touchdown. Valley View went for two and the Wolf Pack defense answered to deny the Cougars the lead. Two plays later, Howe’s pass would be intercepted by Brady Skeen at the Wilkes-Barre Area 23 yard line. The interception turned into points as Kyle Reed scores from one yard out to make it 25-20 with 2:24 remaining in the game.
The Wolf Pack got the ball at their own 35. They got to the Valley View 20 yard line and Howe’s pass was intercepted by Marino to seal the game for the Cougars and seal a 25-20 victory at Wilkes-Barre Area. Wilkes-Barre falls to 1-2 and will travel to Dallas next week. Valley View goes to 2-1
