Westinghouse Wins Trilogy With Farrell

Farrell – The grudge match goes to the Bulldogs.

The Farrell Steelers and Westinghouse Bulldogs met in the state quarterfinals for the third straight season. For the first time, the game was held at the Pegues Sports Complex, Lou Falconi Field.

In 2021, Farrell knocked off the Bulldogs 24-7, and Westinghouse got revenge in 2022 with a 34-6 win.

On Friday night, Westinghouse proved again that it’s not how you start but how you finish. The Bulldogs rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit by scoring 24 fourth-quarter points en route to a 36-20 victory.

“First off, I have to shout out coach Pegues for creating an atmosphere like no other and getting his guys to play with that intensity,” said Westinghouse head coach Donta Green. “I’m so happy for our guys. They never blinked. We’re always talking about being mentally tough and having the proper mindset. They embodied that tonight; I’m truly excited to see that.”

Farrell took a 20-12 lead in the final stanza when quarterback Kabron Smith scored on a 4-yard run with 11:09 following an 8-play 59-yard drive.

“When you play this game, you must play a full 48 minutes,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “I felt like we were the better team tonight, but we didn’t finish the game like we should have. Against great teams like that, you have to play a full 48 minutes, and if you don’t, this can happen. My hats off to Donta Green. They’re moving on, and I guarantee they’ll play in the state championship. They’re a great program like us, but we just didn’t finish it tonight.”

On their second snap of their succeeding drive, Khalil Green dropped back to pass and hit a wide-open freshman, K’shawn Hawkins, on a 66-yard touchdown pass – Kyshawn Robinson’s 2-point conversion tied the game with 10:24 to play.

“That was huge,” Donta Green said. “A freshman, K’yshawn Hawkins, caught that touchdown pass. I think everybody’s heart dropped when the ball was in the air. It seemed like it was in the air for 30 seconds. I was happy we tied the game but even happier for him.”

The two schools traded punts before Farrell drove to the Bulldogs 27-yard line following a 10-play drive. Kabron Smith’s 4th-down pass to Danny Odem was broken up by Lloyd Penn at the goal line, with Westinghouse taking over on downs with 2:43 to play.

As if it was deja vu, Green threw a wide receiver screen to Taymir O’Neal, who used some shifty moves to outrace the Farrell defense for another long touchdown pass, this one 68 yards with 2:12 to play.

“It means a lot to get this win, said Khalil Green. “We had a rough first half, but we stayed together as a family and got the win. We would be in trouble if we didn’t score right before the half. They thought their athletes were better than ours. I trusted my guys, and they made the plays.”

The Bulldogs’ defensive secondary put the clamps down in the fourth quarter as the Steelers’ ensuing offensive snap saw Lloyd Penn intercept Smith with 1:56 left on the fourth quarter clock.

Farrell would get the football back with 17 seconds to play, but sophomore sensation Kyshawn Robinson intercepted Smith and returned the ball 30 yards for a touchdown with six seconds on the clock.

“Shoutout to those guys,” Donta Green said. “That’s something that we’ve been talking about every week. We’ve been waiting for a game like this for those guys. We struggled with creating turnovers at the beginning of the season. What a time to put the coach’s voice to rest because they did a good job tonight.”

Arguably, the turning point of the contest came late in the first half when Farrell, up 14-0, elected to gamble from their 43-yard line, turning the ball over on downs to the Bulldogs with 1:40 to play in the first half.

“We were planning on just trying to draw them offside,” said Pegues. “My quarterback thought he heard a different call. It’s my fault. I should’ve called a timeout and punted the ball. That’s no excuse. It is what it is. We definitely should’ve gotten the job done tonight with the way we played early.”

Driving 43 yards in seven plays, Westinghouse beat the clock when Green tossed a 5-yard touchdown to Penn with 11 seconds remaining in the half.

Khalil Green led Westinghouse, completing 11 of 15 passes for 237 yards while rushing for 48 yards, scoring four total touchdowns. Lloyd Penn led all receivers with five grabs for 77 yards, and O’Neal finished the night with two receptions for 76 yards.

Farrell went from bad to worse as Danny Odem fumbled the second-half kickoff at the Steelers’ 44-yard line.

Westinghouse pulled to within 14-12 when Green scored on a 2-yard run at the 7:27 mark of the third quarter.

“Honestly, that’s all still a blur to me at this point,” said Donta Green. “I just expect our guys to make plays and guys not to quit. That’s how I play it, one play at a time.”

Farrell came into the contest with much emotion, which paid off with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns.

Running back Brandon Chambers, who was filling in for 1000-yard rusher Juelz Johnson, scored on a 10-yard run to open the scoring following a 4-play 29-yard drive.

After forcing a punt to begin the game, Farrell drove to the Bulldogs’ 1-yard line, where Chambers stopped for no gain, though the Steelers forced a 3-and-out, taking over in excellent field position.

Following two punts on their first two drives, Westinghouse drove to the Steelers 17-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.

On the next snap, Chambers raced 83 yards for a touchdown, giving Farrell a 14-0 lead with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Brandon Chambers led all rushers with 160 yards on 24 carries but was limited to only 18 yards in the second half. Kabron Smith added 51 yards rushing while completing 4-of-10 passes for 63 yards with a pair of interceptions.

“Honestly, we did not make any adjustments in the second half,” said Donta Green. ” I just told my guys that you have to play better. We got pushed off the ball and got Farrell’s best shot in the first half. As the game went on, our guys got their feet underneath them. They started playing like how they needed to play.”

Westinghouse will advance to the state semifinals for a second straight season and take on WPIAL Champion Beaver Falls. The Tigers, the 10th seed in WPIAL playoffs, beat Steel Valley 14-12.

“We’re going to enjoy this one tonight, then break down film on what we need to get better at – then begin preparing for Beaver Falls,” concluded Donta Green.

Farrell finishes their season at 11-2 with their third consecutive District 10 championship.

“I told the team that games like this can make you a better person,” Pegues said. “To my seniors, great bunch, a lot of them are going on to play college ball. They’ve been true leaders out there. There are a lot of winners in our senior group; they make this program what they are.”
