New Wilmington – Westminster scored 49 points in the first half en route to a 52-0 victory over Bethany College Saturday afternoon.

The Titans dominated in all three phases and won their third straight contest after a tough 12-8 loss to Marietta to open the season.

Coming off a bye week, Westminster scored on its first six possessions offensively, and Lamont Austin added a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter, opening up a 49-0 halftime lead.

“It was an all-around team effort,” said Westminster head coach Scott Benzel. “In the first half, to be honest with you, all phases were working, and we really came out and attacked. I think we’re getting our mojo going right now.”

Clayton Cannon Jr., who rushed for a game-high 112 yards and two touchdowns, opened the scoring with a 14-yard run on 4th-and-1 at the 10:56 mark of the first quarter, capping a 7-play 58-yard drive.

He later scored on a 52-yard run in the second quarter that pushed the lead to 35-0, moments before Austin’s interception return gave the Titans a 42-0 advantage.

Quarterback Ty McGowan completed 7-of-8 passes for 152 yards and tossed touchdown passes of 52 yards to Brite Cannon and 9 yards to De’Mere White. Brite Cannon finished with a game-high three receptions for 89 yards.

De’Mere White also capped a 4-play 73-yard drive with a 1-yard run, giving Westminster a 21-0 lead with less than nine minutes gone. He ran for 60 yards on six carries.

Nate Wadsworth scored on a 1-yard run following a 7-play 55-yard drive that pushed the Titans’ lead to 49-0 with 5:40 to play in the first half.

“Our job as a coaching staff is to make sure we have these guys ready to play, and understanding the standard we have set,” Benzel said. “That said, I don’t think you ever expect to come out and pour it on like that. I feel for Coach Robinson over there. He’s a great guy and works really hard. He’s got some players, but it’s just not clicking for him right now. I believe that’s a team that can compete with anybody in our league. Today was just our day, and it wasn’t theirs.”

Late in the third quarter, Andrew Caranna booted a 31-yard field goal following a fumble to close the scoring.

Westminster improves to 3-1 on the season and will travel to Washington & Jefferson next Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 2:05.

“We’ve got big game next week down at their place against a rival of ours,” concluded Benzel. “They’re a tough team, and we need to carry over some of that juice and confidence we had today.”

Bethany hosts Saint Vincent next Saturday at 7 pm.

Trenton Huffman passed for 79 yards, and Carlos Cardoza ran for 28 yards to lead the Bison.
