Whitehall Defeats Pocono Mt East 35-24 and Wins the District 11 5A Championship

The Zephyrs Blank the Cardinals in the 2nd Half and Win the DXI 5A Title

Behind at halftime 24-21 to the Cardinals, Whitehall’s defense turned up the heat on a damp chilly night in Catasauqua on Pocono Mt East. The Cardinals were unable to build on their 1st half success of pounding the ball on the ground and their defense was unable stop the Zephyrs. Talon and Tanner Dogmanits both scored on the ground for 14pts to complete the comeback and defeat the Cardinals 35-24 for the Whitehall Zephyrs 9th DXI Title.

The 1st half was a real battle right from the start, Whitehall won the toss and deferred to the 2nd half. After Cole Richards kicked off and no return the Cardinals start 1st and 10 at their own 20yd line. PME drove 80yds and Amari Green ran it in from 1yd out at 6:55 in the 1st quarter and took a 7-0 lead.

Whitehall put together their own long drive, 65yds and except for a Dogmanits to Dogmanits pass, the Zephyrs chewed up over 5 minutes on the ground and ended with Iskander Blanco from 1yd out at 1:17 in the 1st quarter and tied the score at 7-7.

The Cardinals went 3 and out, but a muffed punt gave the ball right back to PME at the 36yd line and they wasted no time. Amari Green said give me the ball and they did, till he ran 18yds for a touchdown at 10:46 in the 2nd quarter and made the score 14-7 in favor of PME.

The Zephyrs started on their own 33yd line 1st and 10. And it only took 2 plays, 1st a Dogmanits to Dogmanits for 62yds to the Cardinals 5yd line. On 1st and goal from the 5yd line Justin Hussett ran it for a touchdown at 10:25 in the 2nd quarter and the score was tied at 14-14

The Cardinals put together another long drive, Ceejay Serfass was the work horse on this drive, ran for 19yds on 1st and ten from the 20yd line and 19 more on 1st and ten from the 45yd line of Whitehall down to the 26 for another 1st down and the 3rd play in a row that went for a 1st. But the drive stalled at the 18yd line and on 4th and 12 Lucas Angst kicked a 35yd FG and PME led 17-14.

The Zephyrs next possession started at their own 39yd line and Hussett ran twice and got Whitehall to the PME 46yd line. The drive ended with a score on a nice pass and catch, Tanner Dogmanits to James Hopkins 29yds. Whitehall back on top 21-17 at 4:12 in the 2nd quarter.

The Cardinals again started on their own 20yd line, but this time passing is what got them down the field. First to Justin Williams for 41yds, next to Ian Stiles for 8yds and finally to Devon Jackson 18yds and the score 1:00 in the 3rd. Pocono Mt East led 24-21 and that would be the halftime score.

Whitehall who deferred to 2nd half, started 1st and 10 at their own 20yd line and made some progress to the 46yd line, but the drive stalled and Cole Richards buried the Cardinals at their own 3yd line. And after loosing 2yds to the 1yd line they punted the ball back to Whitehall. The Zephyrs started with great field position at the PME49yd line, Hussett carried the ball 3 times and the last one got the ball to the 9yd line and Talon Dogmanits ran it in for the score, the Zephyrs regained the lead 28-24 at 4:22 in the 3rd quarter.

Like so many of PME drives this one started on their own 20yd line after Cole Richards kicked off, sending the ball into the endzone. They were able to get a couple of 1st downs, but the drive stalled and Lucas Angst returned the favor and buried Whitehall at their own 7yd line 1st and 10. Tanner Dogmanits engineered a 93yd drive that resulted in him sneaking the ball in from the 1yd line and that gave Whitehall a 2 score lead, 35-24 with 5:42 left in the game.

With time ticking away on the Cardinals season, they started with great field position at their own 37yd line 1st and 10. Between Ceejay Serfass and Amari Green carrying the ball PME drove to the 6yd line, but a sack on 4th and goal from the 11yd line by Iskander Blanco with 2:29 left in the game, ended the Cardinals season and iced the victory for the Zephyrs, and securing the DXI 5A Title for Coach Andy Marino and the Whitehall Zephyrs. Final score 35-24.
