Whitehall-

Whitehall  survives scare from Cavaliers, retakes lead in 2nd half and pulls away late to secure spot in District XI 5A Championship next week.

With the early 6pm start instead of the traditional 7pm kick, the sparse crowd to start the game was somewhat expected.  However, the crowd never did end up filling in, no student section, no Zephyr band…just a “Twilight zone” feel to the whole evening.  An evening which began with the Cavaliers of East Stroudsburg South receiving the opening kick.  The Zephyr defense was up to the task and forced a punt early in the drive.  The Whitehall offense took the the field, and even without running back Jeziah Gregory  who was not in uniform for the game, the Zephyr ground attack didn’t miss a beat as Justin Husset took the handoff from Tanner Dogmanits 28 yards to the house on their first offensive play from scrimmage.  With 7:20 remaining in the first quarter it was Whitehall 7, ESS 0.

The Zephyr defense stood tall the next drive as well and forced another Cavalier punt.  The Cavalier defense got the ball right back for their offense as Jason Greene-Williams picked off a Tanner Dogmanits pass and returned it out to their 38 yard line.

The Cavalier offense then went on a punishing, long, 15 play drive that extended well in to the 2nd quarter and was capped off by a 5 yard run by Ivan Laubach.  The point after was blocked and with just over 4 minutes remaining in the first half, the score was Zephyrs 7, Cavaliers 6.

Not to be outdone, the Zephyr offense responded with a 9 play scoring drive of their own. The drive was capped off via a 28 yard touchdown run by Tanner Dogmanits on third down who found room around the outside of the Cavalier defense  for the score after not having any open receivers downfield with 2:07 remaining in the first half.

In to the 2nd half, with Whitehall set to receive, Cavalier kicker Mamadou Ndiaye kicked and recovered his own onside kick to set up the Cavaliers with the ball to start the half.

Laubach and the Cavalier offense went right back to work and on the legs of Laubach found the end-zone 6 plays later via an 11 yard scamper that was then followed up by a successful 2 point conversion.  With 8:45 left in the 3rd quarter, we were all tied up at 14.

The Whitehall offense answered right back, quickly too, as it just took 5 plays for them to drive the field and find the end-zone once again on the legs of Justin Husset.  This was his 2nd score of the night, this time from 14 yards out to put Whitehall back on top 21-14.

Looking to keep up with the Zephyr offense, the Cavalier offense did just that.  With the help of some trickeration in the backfield, Avery Walker found Ivan Laubach behind the Zephyr defense for a 33 yard touchdown.  Then with a successful 2 point try, the Cavaliers found themselves ahead 22-21 with 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Finding themselves behind for the first time in the game, the Zephyr offense had pressure on them to get the lead back.  They wasted little time as their next drive only took 5 plays and was capped off by a 2 yard up the gut run by Iskander Blanco to grab the lead back for the Zephyrs who then went for 2 themselves and were successful.  With 2:34 left in the 3rd quarter, Whitehall leads 29-22.

The Zephyr defense forced a quick 3 and out for the Cavaliers and the Whitehall offense kept their foot on the gas on their next possession.  Tanner Dogmanits found his brother Talon on a deep shot down the sideline to the Cavalier 9 yard-line and 2 plays later called his own number from 4 yards out to extend the Zephyr lead to 14, 36-22 with 14 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter.

The ensuing kick-off return was fumbled by the Cavaliers and recovered by Whitehall.  The Zephyrs drove all the way down to the Cavalier 1 yard-line, and on 4th and 1 the Cavalier defense turned away the Zephyrs.  The Cavalier offense took the field in the shadow of their own goalposts and moved the ball quickly down field thanks to the legs of Laubach and a personal foul face masking penalty on Whitehall.  The drive however came to an abrupt end as Whitehall stripped the ball from backup qb Greyson Fuller and Whitehall’s Elijah Condon emerged from the pile with the ball.  One quick swing pass from Tanner to Talon Dogmanits later with a few great downfield blocks by Rocco Fonzone and Henry Shultz and the Zephyrs extended their lead to 21, 43-22.

The Cavalier offense took the field and refusing to go quietly, found the end-zone once again for a final score of the night.  This time, Laubach found Lyric Parkins from 11 yards out.  The 2 point attempt was no good. With 1:46 remaining in the game the score was now Whitehall 43, ESS 28.

The Zephyrs recovered the ensuing kick and ran out the clock to secure the playoff victory 43-28.

With the loss, East Stroudsburg South finishes their season with a 2-9 record.  With the victory Whitehall improves to 9-2 on the year andadvances to play Pocono Mountain East who is fresh off their playoff victory over Pleasant Valley 27-0.
